I thought I'd open a new L. M. Montgomery thread. Here's the closed one http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=354715

Well, I've completely lost respect for Kevin Sullivan. First he butchered The Continuing Story and turned Jane of Lantern Hill into a ghost tale, and now he's done a film in which Anne is middle aged, which takes place during WWII, and in which

Gilbert dies.

Such a shame. He made such a great version of AoGG.

He has actually made 2 Anne films since The Continuing Story. The other one is about Anne BEFORE she came to Green Gables. WHY?? Why that time in her life? I don't think Maud would want that part of Anne's life expanded into a film. There is SO much great material in the novels, BEGGING to be made into film. Why not make a film from Anne of Ingleside??

He deviates wildly from the book in the prequel, too. He makes it so that Anne's father doesn't die, he abandons her! WTH?? I am so mad.

I have no idea, I was surprised by how bad The Continuing Story was so I never even looked at them again. I thought AoGG was good and the sequel was fine.

I don't know why he stopped using the books. His versions are not good. It is really unfortunate.

I watched the trailer for the prequel.

I didn't see any of the movies. I loved these books so much as a kid, and as a teen. I couldn't stand to see them butchered like this.

I may see AoGG since I haven't heard too many bad things about that. But ... the other ones, I'm not sure I could handle them!

That series got me through two of the most horrible years of my life! I love all of them, but I think Anne of Windy Poplars might be my favorite.

I've only seen AoGG. I haven't seen the other movies. Saw a preview about The Continuing Story once, but it seemed so horrible.

Are the movies on DVD? We live close to Canada and sometimes they are on the Canadian channel we get, otherwise, I haven't seen them around.

I can't even stand to watch any of the movies after the first one.

I picked up a biography on LM Montgomery, but stopped reading after a bit. It was ruining the magic. It came out last year or so.

I still love the series though.

I love the original movie. THe second, is ok. THe third, terrible. I can watch them but I have to pretend they are simply stand alone movies and no books exist.

I have read the entire series multiple times, and am on my second set of the books. I prefere the tattered copies, though. Rilla is literallly held together by duct tape!

From what I heard, the changes in the 3rd film were made because of the time period change made in the original film. The books were set in Victorian times. The first film was moved up to Edwardian. So Anne's early adult years would have been around the time of World War I, the setting for the third film. The plotlines from the books wouldn't have worked as well in the era. The Continuing Story should never have been made IMO; it really stunk.
