Lower back pain because baby dropped, or...?

SHORT VERSION: When the baby drops, can it cause back pain even if the baby is in an ideal position (ROA or LOA)?

Way too long version: Earlier this week, I had some practice contractions that felt more "real" than the BH and menstrual cramps I'd had before. I felt them a little bit in my back, not just in my sides and lower belly.

Then my midwife came and said that even though the baby was still officially anterior (and head down), s/he was twisted a little and her face was pointed forward. She speculated this could be a reason for my back pain-including practice waves. At the appointment, my midwife encouraged my husband to feel the baby's head position, and he did.

The next day (after a chiropractic appointment with a chiropractor that seemed a little awkward with my pregnant-ness, actually), my extreme lower back (just an inch or two from the end of my tailbone) started hurting in a dull, achy way. I have had NO back pain during this whole pregnancy, so it surprised me. And I worried and restarted positioning exercises that I stopped after falling and severely scraping up my knee a couple of weeks back. But then my husband came, felt my belly, and said the baby's head was even lower now, so maybe that was the reason for the back pain. It's a bit uncomfortable and totally unresponsive to stretching or exercises that would normally help me if my sacrum was just locked up. I just wish I could know what is causing it.

I've had back pain throughout my entire pregnancy, but when my daughter was born 18 mos. ago, I had extreme low back pain the whole day before my water broke...she too was twisted a bit...I've rented a tens unit for this round. I had extreme back labor for 26 hours last time...I've had low back pressure & sciatic nerve pain all morning...try cat stretches & hanging your belly on hands/knees - don't sit at 90 degrees - help baby find her proper spot. That's what I'm doing. Good luck!

No way to know. Your body is so out of whack when you're pregnant. Having back pain at this stage does not mean your baby is OP, but it could. And some women just have back labor for no reason, perhaps that is where you are feeling some BH contractions.

My lower back started hurting about 3 days before I went into labor. I never get lower back pain, so I was pretty sure that something was coming. My baby was in LOA, so she was properly positioned the whole time. After labor started I also felt the contractions strongly in my back.. Anyway, it's totally possible that something is starting for you too.

Thank you guys for your help! I guess it's hard to know the cause of the pain for sure.

Just in case the pain was from the baby being twisted, I spent a lot of time today doing exercises to keep my hips open and encourage anterior positioning. By the end of the day, after becoming quite intense prior to all the exercises, the lower back pain had gone away, and the baby seems to be in a different, more comfortable position now.
