Newborn DS checkups

Hi, My 2 month Ds is uncircumcised. He has his 2 month checkup this week and I'm wondering what to expect from the doc, especially after reading some active posts right now about retraction! Will the doc check his penis?

Also, I have another question: This is kind of odd, but my Ds has started to constantly smells like urine. My daughters never did, so I'm wondering if this is a "boy thing" or if he might have a UTI.

Thanks so much for sharing your advice. I am so relieved that my son is uncircumcised, although it was to my dh's chagrin. He was and still is very upset about this, but I continue to say that this should be our son's decision and not ours.

Congratulations on protecting your son and leaving him intact!! :

At my son's 4 mo. check up, I told the doc not to retract him, and he said ok, and then he proceeded to..........try to retract him. I almost smacked the doc; I was so upset.

They will want to check the testicles but you need to be very firm about saying, "Do NOT touch his penis AT ALL."

My favorite thing to say now after dealing with retraction in the past is "You can do the testicle check but do not touch his foreskin at all" then be prepaired to hear some off the wall comment, may not happen but if it does dont let it throw you. Also be prepaired to remove the dr's hand should it look like they are going to touch his penis at all.

With any luck you will get a dr. who dosnt mess with the foreskin that young but that dosnt mean that later on down the road they wont mess with it. Has happened more than once that mom's have posted about Dr. was fine till ds was X then all the sudden he tried to retract him kind of thing.

Relax take deep breaths and be calm about it. If the Dr. asks why just tell him you are not comfortable with that part of the exam. There is NOTHING he can see by trying to retract that he cannot see by just looking at your ds without touching.

I agree, just tell the doc ahead of time that you do not want him retracted and to leave the foreskin alone!

At DS's first visit (at 1 week) the dr just peeked at the meatus, didn't try to retract at all (and I was standing on guard right there!). I have a fabulous dr though!

Thanks for all the replies. What about my question about him smelling like urine so much lately? Is that something to worry bout?

I totally agree with the advice t obe proactive. Do not allow the diaper to come off until you have explained that you do not want his penis touched at all, that there will be no manipulation of the foreskin at all and be prepared to physically remove the dotors hands. I just had to physically remove a nurse from my boy's penis recently.

As for the urine smell, are you cloth diapering?

Also, if you are not vaccinating or are delaying vaccinations, you might wish to think again about following the standard well baby exams. In my opinion, they are vaccination administration apointments.

You might also get a generally more relaxed attitude from a family practitioner than a pediatrician.

About the diapers some diapers stink. I couldnt stand huggies because of the strong urine smell. I ended up using white cloud. I think cd's can have an odor sometimes. Seen a few threads in diapering about it.

If his urine is concentrated then that could cause it to. Are you bfing? How many wet/poo diapers does he have a day?
