de-skunking dog

Oh, she reeks. She's a house dog, and now the house reeks.

I found online instructions for baking soda & peroxide, but it says not to use it on her face--from what I can tell, her face took the brunt of it. So, use a douche? Really?

Has anyone done this?

Does it work?

Is there anything better?

Thanks!

how horrible. I am not sure what to do honestly but dont they tell people to use tomato juice to remove the smell. You can try it since I know that wont hurt her.

baking soda peroxide is definitely the best. Nothing else we tried at the grooming shop (including fancy expensive deskunking products) worked. I think you could use it on her face if you were very very careful not to get it in her eyes.

I remember bathing our dogs in vast amounts of tomato juice when I was growing up. Fun times.

When ours got it in the face we used v8 juice (it's all we had & the middle of the night), followed up by lemons (I cut them in half & rubbed her head with them), followed by a bath with shampoo. The head is tricky cause you need to be careful of the eyes. The smell will likely not be completely eradicated but rather need a little time to fade.

i've always heard the tomato juice thing, but -- thankfully -- have never had to test it out

This happened to my sister-in-law's golden retriever. They tried a lot of things at home but finally they had to take the dog to a professional groomer who managed to get the smell out.

one trick with the baking soda & peroxide - make sure you make it into a paste, so it's not watery. then also make sure you get the mixture on their skin and up under all their fur. leave on for a good 5 - 10 minutes then rinse throughly and repeat.

many folks make it, it's not sticky enough and they don't move the fur around to really get at the smell and then think it doesn't work.

good luck!

very true....it does take time, and a bit of elbow grease, but works amazingly well compared to the others

Thanks for the advice. I was too afraid of getting baking soda/peroxide in her eyes, so I used a commercial douche. I left it on for about 20 min and then followed with a standard bath. She's not quite "summer's eve fresh," but she's way less skunky.

My kids say baking soda and peroxide, too. Apparently there was an episode of "Fetch with Ruff Ruffman" on PBS that covered this very topic. Tomato juice was not the winner in the deodorizing experiment.
