This came up voluntary in yard. Does anyone know what it is? It is hard as a rock. I thought it was going to be a pumpkin but it looks like something else now.

Looks like a definite member of the squash/pumpkin/gourd family. They will cross pollinate like crazy and you'll end up with all manner of odd gourds.

huh. I guess my next question is what do I do with it?

In my own garden, I've found that volunteers from the squash family are quite tasteless, but it wouldn't hurt to slice it in half and roast it until soft and see if it is suitable for a pie or adding to muffins or banana bread or something. Or carve it like a jack-o-lantern for the fun of it!
