baby still not pooping but nursing 12 times a day!

Hello all,

Our son is 6 days old and is still not pooping. I called the Ped and they are not caling me back. I am pumping, giving him that as well and he pooped on day 4 but now it's been 1.5 days again and no poop. Lots of wet diapers though.
Advice???

Some bf babies really don't poop that much. It sounds like your supply is fine, and baby is peeing, so I wouldn't be worried. Has he had a normal bm, or still meconium? Ped is probably going to tell you to give formula, which I would ignore. Do you have a bf warm line or LC or LLL leader you could call?

Sometimes a warm bath or washcloth rubbed on the anus, gently, can stimulate the bowel a bit. I know my youngest always pooed during the diaper change after being wiped clean. I think it just "reminded" her sphincter to push. Remember, the poo is very soft and sometimes there's not a lot of pressure like an adult would feel.

My baby did the excact same thing. He pooped on Day +2 and then nothing for a week. He then went another week without pooping. How is his weight gain? If his weight gain is okay, I wouldn't worry, but if it is slow then it is a huge red flag that nursing might not be going well. My baby had TERRIBLE weight gain and no poops that was brushed off by Ped and midwife. It wasn't until week 6 that we finally saw a LC who discovered he wasn't transfering milk well. Get a weight check and if it is at all slow get to a LC ASAP to make sure baby is nursing well. The last 3 months have been a nightmare for me because the problem wasn't picked up on at week 1 like it should have been.

we have poop!

Hello all!

Jack finally pooped 4x today. It was INSANE! He pooped a full diaper and then 2x all over my bed! Then another diaper. So, things are looking good, thank goodness!!!

Yea! I know how great that feels to see poop! Who would have thought a little poop would make our day!

I'm so glad your baby finally pooped! The only thing I wonder about is if the pooping was related to getting lots of pumped breastmilk. If he is not pooping from just breastfeeding, I would still want to check if there is a milk transfer issue at the breast.

Olivia was a non-pooper for about the first 4-5 wks. She finally went on day 5 after she was born, 3 diapers in a row, lol. Then it was about once a week and then she caught on and went every day.
