Swine Flu - daycare - shedding potential?

I own a home daycare. My children are not vaccinated. But, I have 1 parent who is absolutely FREAKING out about swine flu. She's on board to have her 12mo old vaccinated ASAP.

BUT, I have concerns for my own children's safety. I won't be getting them vaccinated against this. And I see there is a potential that children will receive the live virus (mist). Is the injection live or dead?

Is it realistic for me to EXCLUDE children who have been vaccinated for a full week? I need to protect my kids first and foremost. (That, and I have an autoimmune disease, so I feel the need to protect myself as well.) Or would it be "okay" to allow vaccinated children providing they receive the dead virus?

Thanks for posting this. I am concerned about this also. I am not going to let my son get vaccinated at school but I am worried that if they are giving a big majority of the kids flumist, that they will be shedding the virus and that he could possibly get it, along with myself, my daughter, husband, etc. The flumist does contain the live virus by the way...I dont even know if I want to send my son to school at that point... Its a hard decision..

BTW, I feel sorry for that 12 month old and all the other kids that are going to receive this vaccine, especially if its the injection... Does anyone know if most kids in school are going to be getting the flumist or the injection?? I am guessing it will just depend on availability and I know there is only 1 company making the flumist so Im sure alot of school kids will receive the injections

I would ask the mother to keep her child out of Daycare for a week or two after she vaxes him for it. We all know the flu vaxes are what starts off the flu season to begin with but who knows what kind of virus they've created for the swine flu?

The injectable flu vaccine contains dead flu viruses, so there will be no shedding and the other kids are not at any risk. Flumist is the one squirted into the nose and it contains the live virus--this is the one case where you might want to keep a child out of daycare for a week if this child has received the live virus.

Hope this helps!
