I know a couple booths at the market sell nice wool. I think Lismore Sheep farm has the best selection. For stores in Halifax there's the Loop on Barrington Street, LK Yarn in the Hydrostone Market (Young Street?), Tangled Skeins on Portland Street in Dartmouth. I think there was another in the Barrington Place Shops, but I haven't been down there in ages. There is also a Halifax Knitting Mamas thread on here:

Charlene, the shop in Barrington has pretty much the same selection as Walmart...mostly acrylic novelty yarns, at least that's what was there last time I was in.

jules, I hope you'll join us over at the knitting thread and perhaps we'll see you too?

So, is playgroup on tomorrow? I'm actually able to come!

Okay, I just called Cassie (she has the keys) and got confirmation that yes, there is playgroup tomorrow.

We'll be there--The Boy has been talking about it since daybreak!

Yard sale at my place

Thanks for the wool tips! And yes, I will join you on the other forum, thanks for the invite

I'm having a yard sale at my place tomorrow (the 26th). Some of the parenting type stuff I'll have are two carriers including a Kelty Tough Traveller and a Baby Trekker, a diaper sprayer, a few cd's, some baby books, an Ikea toddler bed, booster (for the table), some Leap stuff and some other stuff (as well as lot of regular household stuff). I'm in Upper Lawrencetown, a few minutes out of Cole Harbour. PM me if you want the address (not too comfortable posting it here).

Baby Shower

Hi everyone,

We are holding a belated baby shower for Kaye (and Alexandra) and Kim (and Eli) and their families next Sunday, June 24 from 2-4. I wanted to invite any playgroup people who would like to come to celebrate these newish babies!
Both Kaye and Kim have moved here relatively recently so don't know lots of people - playgroup had been a way for them to get to know people. If they still don't know you this would be a great way to meet!
As they both don't need any baby stuff, anyone who wants to bring something could bring some frozen food for their freezers. Or just come yourself to celebrate!

Email me with questions or for directions.

Regards,
Cassie

Canada Day Monday Playgroup

Hi everyone,

I don't know if anyone is thinking of going to the playgroup tomorrow, July 2 or not, but if the weather is nice, it will be in Cornwallis Park. If it is not nice, I will go to the church and open the doors at 11. We may or may not stay, depending on our family plans, but certainly the place will be available for anyone who wants to join in.

Regards and happy Canada Day!
Cassie

Still a Halifax play-group?

My husband and I just moved from Ontario and would love to join a playgroup. Is there room for more? Actually it would be my husband coming with the two kids (a 6m old and a 2.5 year old) while I work.

Where/when do you meet?

Welcome!

Mondays, 11am. We meet at Fort Massey United church on the corner of Queen and...uh...I forget It's up the hill from the Sobey's in the South end.

On nice days we're at the playground near the Westin, right?

And I can say "we" because I can come every week since school has let out

Hi Meghan, I'm glad you found us!

We meet from 11am to 1pm on Mondays at Fort Massey United church on the corner of Queen and Tobin streets. If it's nice we meet at Cornwallis Park, which is by the Barrington Street Super store and the Westin, and the train/bus station. Everything is informal, don't worry about showing up late, or leaving early or whatever.

The door we use for playgroup is on the Tobin Street side of the church, and it's the third door, furthest from Queen Street. You need to ring the bell. The bell is sometimes cranky, ring again if you don't get a reply quickly. If we're meeting in the park there's a sign on the door.

Lesley, I can't wait to see you at playgroup again!

I miss the playgroup... who knows, but we may end up back in the city some day, but then I'll miss my little country house. I wish I could have both! Allison, whenever I read your blog, I wish I could get to know you better. I truly admire anyone who can manage to knit themselves socks! It's a lifetime aspiration of mine.

Howdy All

Hi there,

My DW finally nagged me enough to create an account on mothering...so here I am.

Just wanted to pop on and say that I've been a long-time lurker...first time poster.

Oh...and you may recognize me as the dude that looks astonishingly a lot like Rachel.

Pam, socks are not so hard, especially if you can get someone to show you. Maybe you can convince someone to buy you Lucy Neatby's sock knitting DVDs for birthday or xmas or something. It's like having a knitting instructor right there with you! Well, on your tv, or in your computer at least.

Wow! You guys were almost off page 2...

Just wanted to pop in to say hi. We were hoping to get out your way this summer to visit DH's family but we bought a house instead. Great for us, but we're officially broke. We've convinced DH's mom to come stay with us in September which is way less money than 4 tickets to Halifax to see her (Rayne is no longer a baby and Caitlyn would come, as well). It looks like it may be another year before we visit Nova Scotia again. Rayne and I still miss the playgroup, although we've gone to the LLL meetings here in Orillia a few times. It's just not the same...

Hope everyone is well! I can only imagine how big all the kids are getting. Sounds like there's a few newborns around, though. Alison...any news your way?
Tamara, I was just thinking that it was time to drop you a line! No, nothing exciting in my news so far, sorry! Congrats on the house though! That's very exciting. Where did you buy?
We're north of Toronto and just outside of Orillia. It's still considered a rural community, but it's only 10 minutes outside of the city of Orillia. We are along Lake Simcoe, but our house is on the opposite side of the street for a lakefront home. The cost of a home on the other side of the street facing us (all lakefront properties) is about $300,000 more than what we paid. We've got some NICE neighbors.

The house was actually a cottage that was converted into a house 10 years ago, so it's small and still has the "cottage" feel to it. It's perfect for us, though, and what we wanted - very modest but on a larger lot so lots of backyard space for Rayne. It also needs a LOT of work! We call it our construction zone right now. We are hoping to move in mid-August, but we're still waiting on new flooring (the old stuff had to be torn up because the cat pee smell was so bad!) and getting my workshop built in. I have a detached warehouse which will be awesome for working out of. I can actully "go" to work now - a *big* deal for DH!

Anyway, it's keeping us busy right now, that's for sure!

Hi everyone I keep intending to make it to playgroup at least once this summer since it is held at the playground, but Reece is in swimming lessons everyday so we are pretty much tied up here for a while. I know Reece would love to play with Andrew! Are you still downtown Allison or have you moved to a different library? I haven't seen Xian post here in a while. Anyone hear from them? How are they doing?

I'm also popping in to let everyone know that there is a new Farmer's Market in Elmsdale on Saturdays now in case any of you are travelling through that area over the summer. There are vendors selling handmade clothing, textiles, and jewelry, as well as producers of such things as local honey, preserves and sauces, soaps and shampoos, balms, organic coffees and teas and one vendor is a distributor of Kozy Mei Tais and Klean Kanteens. http://www.eastcoastfamilymarket.com/ That's the website for that particular vendor as I don't know of anyone else selling them locally.

Hope everyone is enjoying the heat and hopefully we can pop in to the park one day soon!

Tamara, that sounds so awesome. I'm quite jealous of you--I really want a house of my own!

Krista, it's nice to hear from you too! I'm at the Alderney Gate library now, by the Dartmouth Ferry Terminal. I think that's where I was last time we talked--I seem to remember Rob coming in to pick up the baby monitor from me here. The only problem is that I work M-F 9-5, so I don't even make alternate Monday playgroups anymore. Only long weekends!

Xtian's still in Chester. Check out http://cspstudio.smugmug.com/ to see what she's been up to.

Charlene told me that Cassie had a baby boy last week, but I don't know any more details than that!
