CD Nebwie Q's

Thread Starter
so I decided to take the CD plunge and I just have a few quick questions:

First, do you need to use any sort of diaper ointment or cream? or powder? I have read that it just makes the diaper less absorbent. Does that mean over time, or while it's actually on the baby?

Second, are woolen soakers or covers really necessary for overnight? Or is that totally individual? Like, my DS has always been a heavy wetter during the nighttime. Any time he's even slightly reached the weight limit for a size diaper, they start to leak. And even then, once in a while, he'll soak through a disposable. I guess what I am asking is if I should *expect* to have to use a woolen cover at night? Or will the Thirsties I bought fight leaks well enough?

I know I had more q's but pregnancy brain just kicked in. Oh well!

Thanks

I would definitely stock up on some doublers to give you extra absorbing power. One of the reasons that folks use wool (or fleece) covers is that they do double-duty: they are the cover, but they will absorb some of the liquid also. This lets you have a bit of a "backup" in case you didn't quite put enough absorbency in the diaper itself.

Check out fleece for a less expensive option than wool - I have heard great things about the Dancing Bears night time covers. I think http://www.pittsburghclothdiapers.com/ that has them.

There are CD friendly rash ointments. The ones that aren't CD friendly are the ones that cause buildup. I use EarthMamaAngelBaby baby bottom balm. It's a mouthful, but it smells really good, and works wonders. I like wool also, but it is a matter of preference. I like it because it is very breathable, and when it comes to rashes, air flow is key. Fleece is similar. You can find some cheap wool on Etsy fro about the same price as fleece. You don't have to use wool or fleece. You can use any type of cover, it's just what works best for you. GL!

You can use any type of diaper rash cream or powder, some just need a liner. There are a couple of cloth diaper safe creams. We love Grandma El's, and even use it on eczema, I haven't found it in any stores, but there are some online CD shops with free shipping. There is a great resource here: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.co...rashcreams.htm

Wool soakers are for fitteds, prefolds, flats... anything without a waterproof shell. If your diapers have a PUL outer, they should be fine. If your little one is a heavy wetter, you can always add more inserts. We use a BG AIO with a hemp babies doubler for night time. I like the pockets for daytime and AIO (with a pocket) for night. If you have an AIO with a pocket, you can add more to it without worrying about bunching up.
