The quick story is we went out to Ventura to try and get labor started walked the beach and ate at Fabio from Top Chef 5's restaurant, went to a friends house who was local to the Birth Center, woke up at about 1 am with 4 miute apart contractions, went to the BC at 3am. They noticed his heart rate was the lower end of normal. They had me rest, drink juice (which I could not keep down really well), and by 7-7:30am it was decided his heart rate was too low to stay in the BC. I was given the option of a hospital across the street or one 20 minutes away with the back up doctor we had met. We chose the further one, because we really liked the doctor, though the drive SUCKED!!!
They checked me in and the nurse only once asked me about medication, I declined. DH and the midwife mostly led things and were so amazingly helpful!! While I ended up with an IV (only electrolytes), an oxygen mask (hated at first, ended up liking it though), and the monitors (I hated these!!) everything else was kept totally natural. They had me walk when I could, did not push cerivcal checks and mostly were great about what I wanted. Sadly his heart rate really started to drop in pushing, they tried to have me not push one contaction and then changed their minds to the possibility of vaccuming him. I was told if I could get him out before they got the vaccum ready, they wouldn't use it, I was able to do it, though I did end up with a small tear. It turns out his cord was very short and wrapped like Shirley Temple curl according to DH.
While I did not get my water birth I am so happy with how things went. My midwife was amazing and so helpful through everything, the hospital was also really good and everything. I have to say though I am thrilled I did not try for a home birth, if I had transfered to my local hospital, I know everything would have been 100% different. That and my little man definetly make up for the change in plans.
Once out he did really well, he even sucked his thumb while they were stitching me up. He is a natural pro at nursing, and has the sweetest lips, and seems so good!! He was 8lbs 2oz, 20.5" long born August 16th at 1:25pm. We are so excited to have hin here!!!!
