Zoloft + BF 3 week old? Is it really safe?

My midwife put me on Zoloft at my 2 week pp appointment - and while I already starting to feel alot better a week later (the past few days especially), I'm concerned about the effects on baby (even though the midwife says it is the very safest of all meds for ppd...). I have read that it is a good idea to pump and dump directly after taking the med or only take the med when your babe will have a long stretch of sleep to let it cycle through your system??? Is this necesary???

I'm concerned about the long term effects on baby - how is this med affecting his brain? Is it? Will it affect his emotional development?

I was put on zoloft soon after delivery with both of my kids - with DD (now 5), I wasn't given any restriction/advice as to when to nurse after taking the dose. She is a happy adjusted kid - in large part I think because the medication allowed me to be a good mom. With DS (11 mos), I was told to try to avoid nursing him when the dose peaked - about 7 hours after taking it, but that in the scheme of things, it was better to nurse with meds than not nurse, or not take the needed med. I did take the med at night, and most days he missed the high concentration period.

All the literature I've read says the risk of depression is worse for baby than bfing with zoloft - baby gets very little of it through the milk. LLL leaders have the med book with exact amounts and timing. And it depends on how high the dose is.

I'm so glad I a)took the meds, and b)breastfed. They both allowed me to be the best mom I can be to my kids. Best to you!

Very, very, very safe.

Yes, very safe.

I was on Paxil (which is actually the 2nd-3rd drug of choice, with Zoloft being 'better' than Paxil in terms of breastfeeding). I started it about 3-4 weeks and took it the entire time I nursed ds. He's 8 and fine. I gestated and nursed dd for 4 years on Paxil. She's fine.

Zoloft doesn't change your emotions. It gives your brain more of the chemicals it's lacking right now.

The other thing to note that there are also KNOWN risks to mom being depressed during infancy - both cognitive and emotional. So, it's not a question of "no meds = no risk to baby". No meds+depressed mom = high risk to baby.

If you need Zoloft, you can be assured that thousands of women have breastfed on it and have kids are doing well.

thankyou everyone for the reassurances and input. Makes sense regarding the depressed, angry, overwhelmed, antisocial mama vs medicated mama.

Another voice for totally safe. I went on it at 6 weeks pp and ds is now a well adjusted 5.5 year old.
