I figured out how to make my pump work...
It was just missing one part- a baby!
I had tried to pump a few times between feeds to have an extra bottle on hand just in case. After 30+ minutes with my little manual, I had 2 ozs. This time I was pumping but he got hungry early, so I decided to pump and feed at the same time. I had five ozs in less than ten minutes. The milk just poured out. And this is with a manual pump- the medela harmony, nothing fancy. Nifty.
