Bumps & bruises at school...

DS had his second day at school today and I just found a big scrape/bruise on him when we were changing into pj's. Having always been around to kiss his booboo's, I was shocked that I hadn't heard about it before then.

What's the norm for schools and kids getting hurt? Do they let parents know when minor accidents happen?

DS said the teacher gave him an ice pack, so they knew about it.

Ours doesn't unless they were "delibertly" hurt by another student my DD has on occassion come home with minor bruises or simple scraps and bandaids she tells me what happened but thats really it.

our school is supposed to give an "ouch report" if anything happens, but one would have to assume that the teacher knew. Do you think he told anyone. My dd isn't the type to tell me or anyone else she got hurt unless it really painful or she needed a bandaid (yk, kids and bandaids ). And he could have also been doing something really fun with other kids that he wouldn't let a scrape get in the way of.

I was called in and they asked me to take my 5 yr old home for the rest of the day (I would have anyway) when he hit his head and got a nice big goosegg. If I were in your shoes, I would go talk to the teacher and find out what the school policy is and let them know what you are looking for.

They don't report all the minor things. They would probably be calling me daily if they did.

Me too!

Ds has already been to the nurses office TWICE this year (we've been in school one week, exactly) for badly skinned knees. I only know about it because he comes home with big bloody band aids I have to clean and change.

Yeah, bumps and bruises would get me calls constantly. They do call for injuries (I guess something more than a bruise). I have gotten emails for small injuries, but not every little thing.

My daycare gives a report for every bump, bruise and skinned knee, but I've actually asked them to cut back to just major stuff. Otherwise, with my monkey boy, it's a sheet every day. You should see the stack I got when he was learning to pull up - Half a ream of paper to tell me, over and over, "Your child tried to stand, and..."

For minor playground accidents, which are a dime a dozen when kids are allowed appropriate freedom to run around, I wouldn't expect an elementary school to call or send home a report.

Depends on the age of the child. For daycare/preschool we got an "ouch report" for anything requiring teacher attention (ranging from "TLC and hugs" to "bandaid" to "ice pack"). For head bumps they were required by licensing to call. For fever, vomiting etc. they called for a pickup and we were required to be there within 30 minutes.

Now that they are in elementary school we only hear about the big stuff. Obviously if they sick enough to go home I get a call. If they required an extended visit to the infirmary (like laying down for a while) I get a note. For bumps, bruises, bandaids and ice packs I only get the child's report.

LOL, that's my kids too. It actually makes me smile when my kids home with scrape, bumps and bruises. That tells me that they've been up and active during the day, rather than sitting inside on a chair all day long.
