I would rent. Will you be caring for the baby while your husband works? Or will there be a nanny?
I don't think I'd move into a larger place until it was necessary. Newborns don't take up very much space. It's nice to have 1 "safe" place to put them down, and we had a co-sleeper which worked great for that. Beyond that we didn't use any baby gear.
You'd probably save alot of money by not moving until the baby was 6 to 9 months. That's when we found we started to use more room. Until then DD had been happy on a blanket in the living room and in our bedroom.
