A doubler is typically thicker and more absorbant than a normal insert.

Okay, thank you.

I have Thirsties AIO and I wanted to stuff them for more absorbency and couldn't figure out if it would be better to buy an insert, or a doubler.

Is there any advantage to using an insert instead of a doubler? I'm guessing trimness?

Trimness is one. Also, some babies are heavier wetters and need the extra aborbancy of doublers. I use them for naps or times where I know I may not be able to change a wet dipe right away. If I'm just hanging out at home I'll use a regular insert.

I have a Thirsties AIO too- love it! I've been stuffing my AIOs with a hemp doubler when we're going on a trip out of the house and at night. The hemp doubler is not thick, its very trim, and it fits in the pocket just fine.

Hm...I always thought of doublers as just an extra layer or two of added absorption. An insert is what does most of the absortion, but if you need extra stuffings, you would add a doubler, which could be made out of a single layer of a prefold, or a couple layers of hemp or a couple layers of microfiber. Its just an insert booster. Or atleast that is what i have halways run across.

To me they are the same.

Technically, an insert is meant to be the main pee-holder, and you add a doubler for nighttime, etc. A microfiber insert cannot be against the skin (MF absorbs so well it can dry baby's skin) so you can't use a MF insert as a doubler inside an AIO, for example.

But really, what is the difference? I consider it to mostly be marketing.

Microfiber against skin....this is the first time i've heard not to do this. This makes sense...my little one would always get red when i did this....i just thought i needed to strip it or something...who knows....wow. Thanks for that info.

Can you use two inserts instead of a doubler?

I'm sorry I don't know anything about CDing.
