Muslim Mamas: Let's Talk Suhoors and Iftars - Page 2

I am trying my best to fast, but I found I wasn't drinking enough water. I felt I was drinking a lot. Yesterday I felt a bladder infection coming on. I stopped fasting and drank a lot of water and some pure cranberry juice yesterday. I didn't eat. I know that doesn't count, but I could at least do that. This morning I woke up with a sore throat. I hope it's gone tomorrow morning because I'm ready to try again.

I guess I am with you on that Liquesce. The food is not an issue for me. I am really not getting hungry except a couple of hours before Iftar. It's making sure I drink enough that caused the problem. It's really hot right now in Houston, and I have to walk in the sun to and from classes. How many glasses do you find you need at suhoor? In ounces I guess since glasses are of a variety of sizes.

Thanks!

One more thing, I don't know if it's the spike in blood sugar due to eating late in the day, but I am also not able to fall asleep early. I don't eat sweets other than fruit. Dates are about the sweetest thing, and I'm only having one or two. Does anyone else find themselves unable to sleep as early/well.

Shukran!

athansor. You can soak them and then they are kinda easy to remove. I sometimes just peel them after cooking and cooling. You can find them canned as well. Look in the Middle Eastern section of the grocery store, if you have one where you shop. They might be called foul meddmas.

Um, this is going to sound horribly excessive , but I'll normally drink 2-3 pint mugs, so that's what, like 30-50 ounces? Part of that's clearly a psychological kind of thing for me though ... obviously a lot of that isn't going to stay in the body long. It's just that I get pretty bad headaches if I get dehydrated, so I feel better going into fasting if I absolutely know that I've made sure I'm as hydrated as I can be.

Although I'm probably just stating the obvious thing here, the other thing is to really be careful with salt, caffeine, and anything else with a reputation for acting as a diuretic ... I think cranberry juice falls pretty high on the list of natural diuretics, actually, so absolutely if you need it use it, but you might want to be careful to keep it to earlier in the night if you can.

My sister calls it social fasting.

vegk8, I drink a good 32oz in the AM, usually half some kind of hot drink and half plain water. This AM I also had some leftover soup for suhoor. I came down with a cold, but I think it is improving. Yesterday was a bummer. Between the cold and the stormy weather, my head was hurting. Today should be clear and cool, so I should be back on the up-and-up.

I was also getting into a bad habit of going to bed way too late. So last night I went at 9:30. I didn't even have fruit besides dates, and no caffeine at all, in fact just a big mug of cold season tea followed by a big mug of bedtime tea, both with some honey. No TV, and I read a little, but not on the Web.

I go back to bed after fajr, but I should be getting up around 7, not 9:30 like yesterday.

Ds will take a break from fasting today and I'm hoping the kids finish the leftovers for their lunch so I can roast a chicken tonight and make a new soup. Come ON, tomatoes...

i like to drink 32+oz. Drinking that much water hurts my stomach, makes me need to go to the bathroom urgently throughout the day, but i'm nursing, so, yeah. alhamdulillah, ds is 2mo, i've been having supply issues, having to supplement, but alhamdulillah, i'm feeling like my supply is actually increasing during ramadhan.: what a blessed month!: alhamdulillah!: but...i haven't been drinking that much water lately though, and i'm starting to feel dehydrated

I drank a ball jar of water this morning. I cut it with a little fruit juice as it seems to make it smoother to drink in large quantities. It must have been 24oz., and boy did it hurt to drink that much at once!

Something really cool and surprising is that I am not having caffeine headaches as a fast. I am very happy about this, of course.

I also keep turing on the radio to hear "Ramadan Mubarak or kareem." That happened twice today, and the station is not Islamic. Cool, eh?

Salaam!

As salamu 'alaikom. I hope Ramadan is going well for you all.

My husband was looking for a particular fish recipe (this one ... basically fish baked with garlic, parsley, and a heck of a lot of sumac, which is a combination I must admit would have never occurred to me on my own) ... and it led me to this blog, which is a little badly organized but does have a wealth of recipes that I thought might interest some of you. In video format, for the cookbook challenged among us.

I need some help ladies, I have only done a complete fast 3 days this Ramadan. Every time I do, I wake up the next morning with a killer migraine. It is weird. Then other days when I try to fast I feel sick to my stomack in the morning and cant even eat Suhoor and then by midday I feel sick because I haven't eaten. It is a terrible cycle. I am not sure how to solve these problems. Does anyone have any advice?

Assalamu Alaikum Summertime Mommy:

My DH gets migraines all of the time during Ramadan if he doesn't drink enough water and eat something for suhoor. I know in some Muslim countries, people eat Suhoor late at night...before sleeping. I wonder if you could try that? (Breakfast before you sleep. ) DH also keeps a bottle of water near the bed, so if he wakes up during the night, he can drink some. He also will sometimes take prophylactic Excedrin Migraine with Suhoor if he fears a Migraine.

No idea if these ideas will help, but I hope so.

Remember, Allah(Swt) honors your intention and knows how much trouble you're having. I'm sure you've been rewarded big-time for those three days.
