hip HIP HOORAY! From hs to public school, willfully and happily.

We went to orientation tonight for my 6 yr old (Kindergarten)

He has been telling me that he is not going, and yadda yadda yadda for the last several weeks. While everyone else (grandma, dad, the stranger on the street) try to say "awww, no, you'll love it...." I just stay silent and try to empathize and still stay matter of fact. He is going.

I got the feeling he was feeling overwhelmed so I didnt make a big deal of orientation tonight. It was an open house so I said "I'll just pick you up from grandma and grandpa's and we'll get your shirt that you picked out from home and chill out and eat a cheeseburer. With extra pickles. "

He watched Maya and Miguel alone and ate and just had some peace and quiet while I showered and then I said "Hey, we're running early so lets just head to see if anyone is at the school yet." we decided it would e a spy mission and he got some spy gear. no ig deal.

We got there and there was a line around the school like 100 people long. I freaked. : I didnt want to freak him out so I just didn't talk. LOL. I suck at acting cool when I am really not.

They had a stupid little game you had to play in that ridiculous crowd with a bingo card and stamps to get all your stuff - most of which I just said "Whatever, I'll get it another time, lets go see your class." (C'mon, just put it in a bag and let us go!! )

He refused to go in.

crap.

So I said "Well I just want to check if there is a class pet. Do you want to stay out here?" His eyes lit up "Ok, I'll come." Then he spotted the lego table and forgot all about the class pet. good thin cause there isnt one.

We stayed for an hour and a half and he loved it so much he had to bring his 3 yr old sister back later to show her the classroom.

I feel so :like this rocks right now!!!!

And I feel so excited for him to go to school and that is a far cry from wanting radical unschooling to work so badly. This is exactly right for us right now. yea!!!!

Just a comment, but I had a huge grin while reading your post. Starting public school is a big step for any child, but for one who felt some anxiety, your positive experience is huge. Speaking as a public school kindergarten teacher , there are some AWESOME classrooms out there. I'm glad your little guy is feeling more comfortable.

Yeah!!! I'm hoping it goes as well for my DD who is starting public school for the first time at age 12. Open house is next Monday, school starts Wednesday. I'm not sure what the 12 year old equivelant is to a lego table, but I hope her school has it.

you know what I think it was more than anything? Me changing my vibe...my energy....my thoughts towards school. I mean - Are their a million and one things I could complain about in "the system?" LOL - absolutley.

But I have been conciously thinking of all the good things for the last month or so and really working on myself.

And for kindergarten - I want to read (Because I never have!) "Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten" because it seems like it may offer a really positive way to look at Kindy. (And I'll read it when I have time when he is in school! woot! LMAO.)

I know what you mean! I keep visualizing my DD chatting with other girls her age about books they like to read.

OH I'm so glad, transformed. I remember you're earlier post where he was not so excited to go. I'm glad he got to check out his classroom, and that you have a new school attitude, and I hope it all continues to go well.

We both have 6 yr. old boys entering the P.S. system for the first time; that's kinda cool!

Slightly OT: but can I just say how nice it is to see excitement about public schools in this forum? :

DD is off to public K in Sept, and we're all really excited (though a little nervous). Anyway...carry on.

Once upon a time, this statement would have triggered all my Big Brother government fears. Now...eh. The more I have come to know the people in my community and especially many of the teachers--some of whom even belong to my church and others of which are facebook friends--the less I worry about the "government indoctrinating my children." The government after all is just us--or at least, people we know.

Sorry to *really* veer OT, but I wanted to add my "yeah" to the "Public schooling is pretty good" comments.
