FluMist shedding

Thread Starter
If a friend informed you that their child was getting the FluMist right before they were coming to your house, and your kids were going to be in close contact, like crowded around something working on it together, would you reschedule?

I know it can shed for three weeks, and we are probably around people all the time who have just gotten it, in the store, etc. But it seems like right after it, in very close contact for a few hours like that, might be better to avoid.

What are your opinions, thoughts?

I know we can't control the the public masses or put our children in a bubble, but if I were in your shoes I would reschedule. You have the opportunity to actually know this information. Most of the time we are not so lucky!!

Personally I probably wouldn't reschedule. If my kids immune systems are good enough to fight it off, then they won't catch it. If they aren't then they'll get sick - but the point is they're going to be exposed to it regularly anyway (and may already have been) and either I trust their bodies or I don't.

For me it's not so cut and dry. I do trust my DS's body and I have faith in his immune system and know he is exposed to lots of things every day all the time, but I still would reschedule. To me this doesn't mean that I don't trust his body. Would you reschedule if the other child actually had the flu? probably. IMO live virus = the flu, (IMO not interested in any debate here) and I would not purposely expose my kid to the flu....to CP or something else that he would obtain lifetime immunity to maybe.

I agree with this. Except, I would intentionally expose to something that dd would obtain lifelong immunity to. But not to the flu.

I agree...that's what I had said

Sorry, I interpreted the "maybe" at the end of your post to mean that you weren't sure. I must have misunderstood. I was just saying that I would expose dd to something like cp or measles without a second thought. Heck, when my mom realized my sister had cp, she stripped us both down and plopped us in the tub together! It floors me that people vax for this now.

My husband will laugh when I show him this....when he asks me a question I always say "I guess" when I mean yes...he interprets I guess to mean maybe..perhaps...he always tells me to be clear in my responses

Y'know, that's fine. She asked for opinions, and MY OPINION is that I would feel ok with it. I didn't ask to be debated and didn't TRY to debate a thing (and don't want to). I personally consider the exposure from the live virus in the flu to be the equivalent of being exposed to someone who may be carrying the live virus and not be ill with it, which TO ME is different than snuggling up with someone actively ill.

What worries me about the flu mist is that it contains not one, but three live viruses. They are supposed to be attenuated, and so forth, but I'm not sure they couldn't mix it up and form some new virus...which is pretty creepy, frankly.

I hate flu mist.

I do too!! My husband is in the military and required to get flu vaccines. Last year he got the flumist when I was pregnant, I was so worried that I would get it! Three viruses in one does not sound good either!!
