a reassuring appointment

After all the "big baby" drama over the last two weeks I finally had an appointment where I left feeling confident and reassured. I saw the midwife I like best.

The ultrasound estimated baby's wt to be 8lb 1oz +/- 1lb, AFI was 13 (normal is 5-25), and placenta was grade 3+ (at 39w1d they expect to see calcifications).

All that talk about gels and induction and all that the last two weeks.. I consented to a pelvic and am 3cm and 70% so she said they wouldn't even do gels at this point if I needed to be induced for a medical reason. She seemed pretty confident that I'd be having a baby soon (well, it will be SOON no matter what considering that 42w is not too far away) but followed up with what we already know - you can walk around at 3 for a few weeks.

I've got the acupuncture/massage/chiro adjustment Tuesday, the day before my EDD and I'm hoping that if I don't have a baby this weekend that it pushes me over the edge. If not, my next appointment is Friday when I'll be 40w2d and we'll re-discuss options at that point.

I did find out that if the baby is over 8lb 8oz or so they'll want to do blood sugar checks (in room), and that if it's above 40 they encourage nursing, below 40 they encourage formula but are happy to use a syringe instead of bottle.

Glad things are looking up! I will be watching out for you, as you are due the day before me. Doesn't it seem like we might never have our babies? I am almost getting used to waiting now...

yeah I've hit that wall too - I've pretty much come to accept I'm going to be pregnant forever

interesting about the rule for sugar. I know they checked my baby who was 9.2. I honestly can't remember if his were high or low but I nursed him. I mean I would think that would be the best. Why would giving the baby artificial food be better than giving them mom food? Especially because the earlier and more you nurse, the sooner your milk will come in.

I'm also with you on being pregnant forever. I'm also due the day after you and am just here. I really don't want to go into Sept.

I'm with you texaspeach with being pregnant forever... or at least until the end of the month *crosses fingers* hopefully!

and I am so happy for you with your reassuring news. It will play such an important part on how your mind handles everything.

Popping in from Nov DDC, Hi TXPeach! :

I hope you're not letting them bring you down with the bigbaby thing, that's what sucked me into the induction-c/s vacuum (and yes, I walked around at 3cm from 34 wks). Don't get discouraged mamma!

Re the BS thing, your colostrum is absolutely superior to formula if baby's BS is low, I would refuse any formula and let baby nurse instead. One session of formula can set you off on a dangerous road (sleepy baby, not interested in nursing, etc.).

I'm so excited for you!

Off to stalk the Sept. DDC...
