Is there a variety of roses that is best for rose hips?

Sometime in the future, I'm going to hopefully be growing a good portion of my medicinal herbs. I've been thinking about rose hips, and I know there are lots of different types of roses. Does anyone know if there are certain roses that are better for the job?

I've found the best rose hips come from wild roses.

Yes there are definitely breeds that are better for this. You want a vintage breed... a true Rosa rugosa. But even among rugosas, hips production varies by breed. You'd need to research each breed to find out about their hips. If you can find a local rose garden, that's probably your best information resource for roses that will work in your climate.

Rosa Canina (aka: dog rose) is the best if you want a rose hip harvest. Often this is the variety of rose you see growing wild on farms and roadsides. We have plenty growing wild on our farm and I'm hoping to try rose hip syrup and jam this fall. I believe they can be ordered through web nurseries.

Thanks everyone! I saw wild roses in the Peaceful Valley catalog, so I'm going to look into those ones. If not, I'll find something else!

I have been wondering the same thing myself. What "peaceful valley" catalog are you referring too? Is there a link?

Thanks!
