Would you leave a cat home alone...

...from Friday evening until Monday morning? We've left him overnight, but I'm not sure if it's okay to leave him alone this time. He's about five years old, healthy, no problems.

What do you think?
Thanks!

For that amount of time,I'd want a friend or neighour to check in on him, clean the litterbox, check food and water, spend some time with him if he is a very social cat.

Well, that's only 48 hours alone. If you're there until Friday evening, and come back Monday morning ... it's just saturday and sunday that he's alone.

Make sure he has lots of water. Plan for bizarre events, i.e. he knocks all his water onto the floor. So, leave like triple the water out you would normally. Leave a light on for him somewhere. Maybe even the radio in one room, if he likes that.

I don't think 48 hours is too much.

Absolutely, I've done that before with no ill effects. I left a couple of litter boxes actually because she was finicky about going. They also have those self cleaning boxes, right?

It also depends on the personality of said kitty.

Nope, no way. I'd have a friend or neighbour checking in on saturday and sunday.

I would do it. We leave our cat to go camping, and it's about the same amount of time. Yes, the kitty is happy to see us home, but he usually makes less messes than when we're home to clean up after him.

I wouldn't leave my four cats that long but if I just had one or two cats then I would!

Just leave out a fresh clean litter box (two boxes if he's really picky), 2 bowls of water in the normal spot, and one or two more bowls somewhere else in the house in case he goes kitty crazy in one spot and knocks stuff over. Leave out a lot of food too of course. Put away anything he might get into while bored, like yarn.

I don't see what could possible go wrong with one healthy cat being alone for a couple days with enough food and water, short of major disaster like the house burning down or something...

We do that pretty frequently, at least three times a year. We have a cat door though that allows him to go in and out. We leave about 5 dishes of food and two bowls of water for him.

Personally, I'd be more confortable having a friend of neighbor checking in once a day. If you do leave your cat along for that long, make sure you have a plan for emergencies, say, for some reason you can't get back Monday.

We've often left our cat alone for that long; we leave several bowls of water and a whole bunch of food and a clean litterbox, and we're off. He has never suffered ill effects from it.

Yes, absolutely, I've done that with my cats for my whole life and never had any kind of problem. Your cat may be a little miffed at you when you get back, be prepared to give some extra attention.

Do it often. They have a self feeder & self waterer, so that's not a problem. Just clean the box good before you leave. Leave the toilet up in case they decide to upend their water or something.

I guess it depends on your cats. Mine are all old & docile any more. If you have a wild child, you may want to have someone check.

Leaving the toilet open as a last resort water source is a great idea!

They invented that one themselves...

We do this with our two cats. They usually eat raw food, but for leaving them for 48 hours we leave out kibble and a TON of water, plus the toilet lids open We have 2 litterboxes which don't get cleaned as often as they should anyway. They're always fine.

Our friends do it - they leave two litter boxes out, several bowls of food and water (like 10x what you would imagine she would need!) and they ask us to come check one weekend day.

Yes. My cat is Mr Independent, and I've left for that period a decent amount of times.

Of course he accosts me when I get back because he was so lonely.

nak

yes, we have done this. I also leave a bathroom sink with water in it.

No I wouldn't My sister comes over everyday that we are gone spends time with them feeds them as they normally would be fed plays with them. But my cats are VERY VERY social and needy!

I also go to my sisters if they are out of town and do the same thing I go at least once a day but she comes here twice a day. Mine are way more needy than hers are. I can sit there and try to play with hers and they walk away from me while mine will jump up on her and snuggle

But even if they were not as social I would want someone to come by and check on them at least once a day just for my own peace of mind and to know that their scheduel was not messed up.

Having someone check on the cat is always a nice thing. But IMO not really necessary. We always left the cats alone for a week while we went on vacation. Tons of dry food & water, extra litter box.
