WInter is right around the corner-Plus sized mamas

So, ever the worrier/planner, I have started thinking about the cold weather coming soon and how to continue wearing DD. I am a 24-26 and usually take the largest size available in jackets so the 'buy a coat that's too big and zip it up over you and LO' isn't really a viable option for me.
DD will be 7 months in November and so far she is a small babe.

Plus sized mamas - has anyone bought the kindercoat? I'm wondering how they are sized. I take a 3x in a lot of clothing - the website says they are sized large so I'm wondering if a 2x would work?

I don't think a poncho is my most flattering option, plus it is quite cold here

Any other ideas? Have any larger mamas sewn a fleece zipper extender for their exising coat?

Should I just dress baby warmly and wear a ring sling over my coat?

BTW, I have a cuddly (like a Moby) and ring slings. Open to buying other kinds to work out a winter system

I am a plus sized mama too and I could get my babes under my coat when they were really small... (I wear a woven wrap as my main carrier)

When they were bigger though I would put them in the wrap and then zip my coat over their legs and as as far as I could and then I would tuck a blanket over the exposed area...

Even in really cold weather my warmth kept them warm and their warmth kept me warm even if my coat isn't done up completely....

I've been curious about this as well. Ds is too heavy for front carriers for me now & so I've been contemplating how to put him on my back in the winter. The whole thing seems very cumbersome but I'm hoping it will work itself out as the weather slowly gets cooler & we can try different things.

If you're interested in converting an existing coat for backwearing, I found this tutorial through The Babywearer that might be helpful.

I haven't taken the plunge yet but I will have to soon since winters here in Montreal can be murder and I can't imagine pushing the stroller through slush and ice. Even if my DD is 25 lbs, I'd still rather wear her than push her!

There are also detailed instructions on how to make a zip-in fleece panel for front wearing:

Thanks for the link halfasianmomma - that is awesome. I am most definitely turning this ugly old parka that's hiding in my closet into that jacket!

lifeguard...remember that if you're cutting into a down jacket, you need to sew channels where you plan on cutting, to avoid an explosion of feathers (this from a mama who made the unfortunate mistake!).

There are also carrier covers that just go over the baby, and not the adult (so it doesn't matter what size you are). Catbird and Monkey Pockets are 2 makers.

Thanks for the tip halfasianmomma - I can just imagine the mess. I love that I wouldn't have to try to get the carrier fitted over a jacket & ds - it'll be just as comfy as it is now!

I've honestly been dreading walking the dogs as it slowly gets cooler here!

I have a kindercoat, but it's a size medium and it's very large on me -- not sure if that's helpful or not, being more of a size 10-ish person, but I think they do run big if mine is any indication. This page has measurements if that helps.

ETA: I moved to Ottawa last February and realized quite quickly that I would never step outside if I didn't have some sort of way to keep dd warm while wearing her. This coat was fantastic and it was well worth the money.

I made it!!! It didn't turn out perfectly but I think it will be useful anyway. It's an old jacket that was never used anyway so if we turn out to not like it no real loss. I put pictures on my blog: http://allmylifesacircle.wordpress.c...earing-jacket/

THANK YOU! The measurements are what I needed to make a decison!

Lifeguard...that's awesome!!! I`m so glad you were able to reuse an old coat to make something useful for yourself. Tell me something though...Did you have someone help you figure out where the hole in the back would be, or did you just eyeball it? Just curious...

To figure out the placement of the hole I put ds on my back in my ergo & then had dh measure from the back of my neck to where ds' chin. That's where I put the top of the hole. Then I had dh measure how tall ds is from shoulder to bum in the ergo & that is how tall I made the hole. I made it as wide as ds' shoulder.
