There's 2 main/popular brands most people seem to use- GMD and LL (greenmountaindiapers and littlelions). LL's are way cheaper. But a lot of people prefer GMD measurements over LL (I believe they're cut wider) because they get more use out of the dipes before sizing up.

I bought LL for the price, but have yet to see them in action. I just couldn't pass up the clearanced "seconds"! http://www.little-lions.com/page50.html

I used LL prefolds for my son when he was around 12 months old and they worked great.

I am using GMD prefolds for my daughter since we having been using them from day 1. I decided to go with the GMD this time because of the sizing of their newborn and infant prefolds. She was 6lbs 6oz at birth and the newborn (orange edge) fit her pretty much right away and she is still wearing them now (8 weeks old, 10lbs 7oz). They are starting to look a little small now and we will be moving up to the infant (yellow edge) shortly.

I love the GMD prefolds. I just got the organic unbleached red edged ones and they are so soft! I LOVE them. organic prefold with a wool cover it perfection itself!

we have both regular chinese prefolds (cant remember where i ordered these from), and gmd brown edge. right now the gmds work on dd, but they are bulky so i dont use them much. the regular cpf are much trimmer. i will probably change my mind though in the next couple months when the brown edge pfs fit better- the quality is much better. i just should have bought the red edges.

How do you fold the Gerbers? My 2yo still fits in the walmart-gerber prefolds.

I lay him on it and then fold the edges of the side closest to me to the middle and then fold it up toward him...I end up having to wing them out really far to get the edges of the part he's laying on to come up on it...Did that make any sense at all?

Green Mountain prefolds.

Excellent quality, no guessing on the sizes as far as what covers they fit. Awesome! We have the orange and the yellow.

I once found some actually fluffy DSQ gerbers that were a great quality... since then nope only ones I find are the 3 layered flat things that don't hold a bit. My favorite prefolds are the GMD I love there measurments and they have lasted us forever and more.

I like brown edge prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. Once they didn't make it around my DD, they're great for trifolding. I've added fitteds to my stash or I'd buy the next size up.

Consider their flats even though they're rarely in stock.

I started with Dappi stuff, and their prefolds are like infant size and have polyester in the middle. THey don't hold up much and I wouldn't recommend them, but it was a cheap way to test CDs.
I ordered unbleached factory seconds from clothdiaper.com. THey are very soft and absorbent. I also have doublers for when we go out to go with them. I don't know why they are qualified as seconds, they are wonderful! DS is now almost completely in cloth. I am expecting some pocket diapers tomorrow that will be his nighttime routine from now on, good bye sposies forever
I hear great things about GMD sizing for newborns/small kiddos and I am considering of getting a dozen preemies, newborns and small each from them for the next baby (they tend to be small in our family).

I use Bummis...

I didn't find them expensive and they are very durable.... I had bought 3 dozen when ds#1 was a baby and used them pretty much non-stop until ds#3 was out of diapers... so for almost 7 years... I need to replace a few for the next baby but it will only cost me about 25$ for another dozen...

AFWife: Yes, that did make sense. I also fan out the front so I put baby on the diaper (unfolded prefold) and then fold the front into the middle, bring it up and fan the front out. It is tight and the two edges don't overlap much but I can still get my sturdy 2yo in there (he's out of dipes by now though). Good luck.

I also have some 14.5x22inch chinese prefolds which are great but unfortunately too long for us.

My fav prefolds are green mountain diaper "cloth-eez" prefolds.

I like the regular 4x6x4 Chinese prefolds from Nicki's Diapers. I fold them down in back until baby grows into the rise, they last a very long time and they're not terribly expensive.
