Lining knit mittens with fleece, good idea or bad idea?

I'm knitting mittens for the kids. I've been toying with the idea of lining them with fleece. Fleece is so warm and isn't it generally somewhat water resistant? I'm thinking it would help repel the melting snow a bit when they're digging in it and things. Or am I wrong?

It's a FANTASTIC idea. I once bought a pair like this and adored them... they were the warmest mittens I've ever had, and was so sad when I lost one. I've never been able to find them again, and haven't managed to knit myself a pair of mittens yet.

Great Idea! Other alternatives are felting the mittens (my kids love these) or I am knitting thrummed mittens that should self felt while wearing.

I would also suggest looking at a felted mitten pattern. I am blown away every time my daughter takes hers off, they;ll be just caked in snow, slip them off shake them out, the mittens are totally dry inside and her hands are toasty (and she's a cold kid). They are just awesome. I use the pattern A Family of Felted Mittens by Theresa Gaffey.

Has anyone tried felted thrummed mittens? It seems like you could keep the inside from felting as well...
