postpartum exercise

how soon do you intend to start exercising, recoveries permitting? and what do you do? just because i'm curious...is anybody good at keeping up with their kegels? hate 'em, personally

babe is now nine days old and i've at least meandered around the neighborhood or walked to the park most days of the past week, always wearing ds in my psling. it's just been so crazy hot! i've been wanting to do some yoga for days now but i have a few weak spots in my ab muscles that burn when stretched. i'm going to try tomorrow if the belly bandit provides as much support as i'm hoping.

I am going to wait until 6 weeks to start any heavy exercise, but I have a 2 yr old, so I consider chasing her around pretty good exercise. My favorive postpartum workout Lindsay Brinns Boot Camp Workout. Yeah baby do you get into shape quick. And it is a new exercise everyday so you don't get bored. I think it is good for every mom.

And the kegels, I hate em too. I always forgot to do them when I pregnant, so why would I rememeber them now. I try to do them but don't always.

I'm basically just continuing my pregnancy routine, so I guess I'm already exercising. But it's gentle and I'm being responsive/tuned in to my body/energy levels.

I use the Tupler Technique... there's "Maternal Fitness" for pregnancy and "Lose the Mummy Tummy" for the rest of the time. There are a fair number of threads on mdc about her techniques. She focuses on closing the diastasis that forms during pregnancy and her books have great info on postpartum concernc (how to protect your back/wrists/diastasis while carrying the babe or brestfeeding, how to avoid prolapse or manage it if it does occur, how to do scar massage, ab splinting, correct posture for using the toilet, etc). I like that the exercises are easy to do with babes and toddlers, that the routine doesn't take much time, and that it's safe for my prolapse.

Other than that, I belly dance every day... the only thing that changes is the intensity of the dance and the moves I use. I was doing gentle dance moves in the shower last night when Tor was not yet 24 hours old. There are some great intro to belly dance dvds out there too if you don't have classes available!

Oh... and I like Shiva Rea's pp yoga dvd. But it's tough to do with an older kiddo so it's more of a "now & then" dvd.

I lift heavy weights. I trained for a figure competition but because of my schedule and money I never did get to compete.

I hardcore work out, so I wait until 8 weeks post partum, even then, I do not go as hard as I like. I am not bleeding and feel completely ok, besides being exhausted from having 2 little ones. I am less concerned with losing weight and more concerned with changing the composition of my body, I guess.

So 4 more weeks and to the gym for me!

I am having a hard time not going back to some of my excersizing. I am walking and dancing, but with LO I will probably have to wait to go back to class until I an leave him for the hour. I did go and dance a performance a few days ago, though that was awesome. I have to say the walk to the event was harder then the dancing I hope the weather holds out beause I so want to get back in the pool before the season ends!
