Kirkland Dog Food?

Foes or fans? We just got a ginormous bag instead of our usual Wellness and our dog has THE stinkiest gas I've ever smelled coming out of anything! We're almost on week 2 of it, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if it went away. I'm also concerned that this is a sign of a high % of filler.

Bloat, loose stools and general malaise were experienced by my two dogs.

I've tried to put them on it twice and both times got the same reaction. They are eating Purina Beneful and we don't have these issues.

I've written to Costco and complained about it, as "kirkland signature" products are supposed to be superior and great, but this product is a failure imo.

Kirkland pet food is one of the best in its price range. Personally, I dont feed kibble, and if I did it would be grain free...but for what it is, it is a good quality food.

You want you first several ingredients listed to be meat meals (not by product). If just the meat is listed, by the time you cook and dry it it is actually way further down the list.

For example, since it was mentioned, take a look at beneful's ingredients

INGREDIENTS
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

Chicken by product meal is second...not chicken meal. Beef if pretty far down and as its not listed as meal, in actuality is much further down. So you basically have corn with a tiny bit of meat thrown in.

I fed my dogs Kirkland lamb and rice for years - no problems, lots of compliments on their coats. To compare with the beneful ingredients, here are the top ingredients in Kirkland Chicken, Rice, and Vegetable:

Quote:
Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearl barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and vitamin E), egg product, beet pulp, potatoes, fish meal, flaxseed, natural flavor, brewers dried yeast, millet, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, carrots, peas, kelp, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamin E
Costco will always refund you in full if the food doesn't work out for you, but I'm surprised that dogs did better on basically corn meal than on the Kirkland... maybe they were allergic to beet pulp? Are the dogs related?

Nope, one is a pug and one is a big giant mutt. I have no idea why, but they get so stinky and gassy and their poo gets mucus in it. It's really awful.

Huh. Our dog has always had a sensitive stomach w/ regards to dog food, which is funny since he'll eat anything and is currently 10# overweight. Because of tender tummy we chose the lamb and rice Kirkland, hoping it'd be mild. But we've had the same experience as Porcelain Interior w/ regards to gas and loose stools, and lots more of it--I thought a bear had pooped in our yard but it was the poor dog.

Thanks for the rec' PI, but we tried Beneful and it made him vomit--he can't have any dyes, apparently. That's why we've used pricey brands like Wellness in the past. Kirkland's ingredients seem fine and the price is right, but this gas, wow, none of us can stand it!!!

I hadn't even thought of returning it, thanks, but we've already poured it into our food container and thrown out the bag. I hate to waste 20# of food, but this smell is like to kill us!

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it. At this point I'm ready to go back to $$$ just so my 4 y/o will quit yelling "Fozzy, you STINK!"

It might also be the kind of meat in it....Our dog has horrible gas on Lamb and rice but none on chicken and rice.

We've used the chicken and rice for years now, and the dogs have done very well on it. Any gas is from breaking into the compost pile.
