quick question about fabric grain

I am making a robe for my nephew and I messed up one of my pattern pieces. I have enough fabric leftover to cut a new piece, but the fabric grain will be running perpendicular to what was indicated. In terms of the pattern on the fabric it won't matter. Can I cut my new piece from the fabric I have or will I need to go out and buy more fabric? FWIW, I am doing Kwik Sew 3329 and the piece I screwed up was the front band that goes around the neck and down the sides of the front of the robe. Thanks!!

Is the neck piece supposed to be cut on the straight grain (parallel to the selvege) and you want to cut it on the cross grain (cross ways, parallel to the cut edge of the fabric)? Is that what you are asking? The answer is "it depends". The cross grain is stretchier than the straight grain, which is the most stable. For the band around the neck on a robe, I don't think that it will matter one way or another. You might consider using an iron on interfacing for added stability. But not if the robe is terry, French terry, fleece, or velour. One, the interfacing won't stick to those fabrics and, two, it's not necessary anyway.

Yes, it is supposed to be cut on the straight grain and I want to cut it on the cross grain. I am using flannel.

I'd use some tricot knit iron-on interfacing on the neck band and cut it on the cross grain. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.j...RODID=prd14641 It will help stabilize the stretch and give some weight to the flannel. At a guess, the pattern already calls for interfacing that piece.
