Does anyone make their own chocolate milk mix?

My kids love ovaltine but, not only is it crazy expensive, it has stuff it in I'm not crazy about.

I have looked online but the recipes I'm finding call for powdered creamer or non fat dry milk (which, I can't understand why I need non fat dry milk if I'm adding it to milk??)

Does anyone have a recipe for chocolate milk mix?

I've made my own chocolate syrup before... it's easy peasy, and doesn't involve any weird stuff.

Recipe I use is similar to this one

i make a powdered mix, because my family likes hot chocolate more than cold:

8 oz fair trade organic cocoa powder
24 oz organic powdered milk
2 oz organic vanilla powder
8 oz organic sugar
2 tbls sea salt

this is just an approximation, you may need to add more milk/sugar/salt/vanilla to your taste. i keep our in a gallon glass jar with a stainless steel scoop, for easy portioning.

eta: forgot to add: you can add milk or water when you're ready for chocolate milk. i add about 3 tbl powder for 10 oz liquid.

off to check out the syrup recipe!:

The recipe posted above is the one I used! Its very yummy I'd been trying to make home made chocolate milk for a while and before I found that recipe, the best I could manage was blending milk with cocoa powder and sugar, then letting it sit in the fridge for foreeeever while the foam went back down, lol.

I use quite a bit less sugar than is called for in the link above, when I make chocolate syrup. I also use unrefined cane sugar (Rapadura) instead of white sugar. Mine is 1 part cocoa powder, 2 parts sugar, 2 parts water, sometimes a pinch of salt and splash of vanilla extract (I usually forget those two, though), whisk in saucepan over med/low heat until all lumps are dissolved, stir and simmer gently for a few minutes (careful, it can burn easily, don't walk away either because it can boil over in the blink of an eye). Store it in a jar in the fridge. It's just as easy to make chocolate milk or hot cocoa with this as with any store-bought syrup or powder.

I make hot chocolate with baking cocoa, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and cayenne pepper (just a tiny bit), all to taste. Maybe leave out the cayenne for the kids, depending on their tastes. good luck. going to have to give it a try making chocolate syrup homemade ice cream and chocolate syrup=yum!

You guys make it so complicated .
I follow the instrux on the cocoa powder container.

Into 1 ordinary size mug:
1/2 teasp. sugar.
1/4 teasp cocoa powder.
Mix with a little milk into a thick paste.
Fill to top with milk.
Stir again.
Heat in microwave to preference.

Add marshmallows and whipped cream on top when I'm feeling nice.

DC ask for this as part of their evening dessert almost every night, past 4 years!
For DS1 I double the sugar/cocoa concentration, the others haven't noticed.
Stuff like Ovaltine tastes vile to me, somehow more processed.

Complicated how? Your recipe is basically what everyone else has posted - the only difference is you make yours one by one and we were looking for something that could be made in a large batch and used as needed.

Our "chocolate milk" is...

We simply add a little bit of organic chocolate hemp milk into raw cow milk. This way it's just a tiny bit sweet and healthy at the same time

glad you liked it - she has a lot of really good recipes on her site (there are a few flops though, like the recipe with sour cream and brown sugar - my family was gagging - and they are not picky!)...

Oh no! Warning - if you make it and put it into the fridge - it turns into the most amazing chocolate truffle / spoon fudge ever. Goodness, it's heavenly. I can't stop eating it with a spoon!

I was going to post the Pioneer Woman recipe. :

Alton Brown did a show on how to make your own chocolate syrup. It has corn syrup in it, though.
