Comparing Babyhawk to Kozy?

Hi all,

I love my Babyhawk mei tai. It has been the only carrier I really feel comfortable with...I failed with the Moby, I thought the sling was uncomfortable, I love the Ergo but dd is still a little too short for it yet...So the Babyhawk has been the savior of my life! But recently after long (4+) mile walks, my shoulders start to hurt, as dd is getting bigger. I think she is getting close to ready to try a back carry, but I was wondering about other types of Mei Tai carriers, it seems that many here on MDC like the Kozy. Are there fundamental differences between the BH and the Kozy that make one more comfy than the other? I'm just curious...New at this and all...

I have had a BH and a Kozy and I personally preferred the BH because of how soft the fabric was compared to the Kozy. However, the BH did seem to "stretch" more with the weight of the baby, if that makes sense. Once my ds got too heavy for them (it started to hurt my back/shoulders) I used the Ergo which was amazing! You might want to try it again.

Here's how the Kozy differs from BH -
  • has a curved top that can be folded down
  • uses canvas for the straps and inside of the panel. It starts out not so soft, but gets very soft as you use and wash it.
  • both the top and waist straps are at a 45 degree angle
  • the body feels (may be too...haven't compared exactly) bigger than the BH
  • the straps are not tapered like the BH
Hope that helps!

I would go ahead and try your dd on your back in the BabyHawk, and see how that goes. My guess is though that the Kozy isn't going to be significantly more comfortable for a back carry than the BabyHawk. If it's not comfy using the BabyHawk, that's probably a sign that you need to get baby's weight off your shoulders and onto your hips.

The Kozy's straps are more wide-set/far apart than the BabyHawk's, FWIW -- I often find that women with narrow or sloping shoulders have more difficulties with the Kozy than they do with the BH.

I used the Kozy with Ds and I was able to get him on my back at around 7 months safely by myself he also got the hang of what to do when he saw the carrier I found that the back carry was perfect for long walks and even little hikes I was able to wear Ds for about 8 hours on and off one day when we where out all day.

I just got a babyhawk for this LO and I am curious to see the difference between then. The babyhawk to me seems like the neck support is a lot stronger than the Kozy's and the straps are very different.
