I never should have read this article. Thinking of all those poor babies.

But they acknowledge that a circumcision drive in the United States would be unlikely to have a drastic impact: the procedure does not seem to protect those at greatest risk here, men who have sex with men.

The academy is revising its guidelines, however, and is likely to do away with the neutral tone in favor of a more encouraging policy stating that circumcision has health benefits even beyond H.I.V. prevention,

Granted, I'm PMSing like a mad woman, but that article made me want to jump through the screen, smack a few people, and then bawl my eyes out.

How the hell has RIC worked for us up to this point? I mean really.. are circ'd men not getting HIV here? We already have issues getting men to use condoms as it is!!!! So now, they might as well be saying.. "Hey, you already cut men out there!! Guess what?!?! You're good to go!!".

WTF.

Sorry. I have to shut up now. :

I'm go glad people share my rage.

I mean, if they say that 79% of our current male population is circ'd, why do we have such an "epidemic" of HIV?

Vote in the poll! It's about 60% against circ so far

:::::::: irked:::

WHY?????? Of course my pro-circ sister thinks this is great now she has a "reason" to mutilate her unborn child. I can't stand this garbage they spew in America.

I registered to post a comment, but it's not giving me the option to do so. Am I missing something?

I wonder...
Since the circ rates are nearing 50/50, when these intact boys are sexually active, if there will be any decline in HIV rates?

Is it so hard to teach condom use, rather than routinely perform surgical procedures on newborn boys? I don't get this at all!

Oh, don't worry.. I'm sure lots of people are raging right along with us. Even my non-pro-circ-but-not against-it-either DH thinks this is beyond ridiculous.

I've heard/seen a few pro-circ people here and there talk about the rate of HIV and circ'd men like this - "Well, if we didn't circ as many boys as we do now, just imagine how much worse our HIV infection rates would be!!!!". Of course, that's completely crazy, but that's how many people rationalize it in their heads.

Unfortunately, not only is this way of thinking NOT going to curb our rates of HIV, it's likely going to only make it worse. I know too many people who already don't use condoms the way they should.. these same people and others just like them are going to get an even bigger false sense of security. They're going to have a feeling of "Phew!! He's/I'm CIRC'D!!! I have/he has waaaaay less chance of catching/spreading diseases!!" before hopping into bed without protection.

It's also giving more and more ammo for pro-circ pediatricians to push circ on parents who were not planning on doing so.. and even more for those parents who made the right decision in leaving their boys intact. I truly feel that these smart parents are facing a serious nightmare.

Yep, exactly what I'm fearing

This makes zero sense.

If circumcision did prevent HIV effectively, than the US never would have had the rates of HIV-infection we did in the 80s and 90s. Most US men were circumcised at the time!

This is just ridiculous. It is mindboggling to think recommending circ to reduce or prevent hiv. What about sex education? What about making condoms more readily available, for free? What about those efforts? So many wrong messages are being sent. :

This makes me feel sick.
