I think pruning would help the fruit to grow bigger. I think I'm going to do the same with my vines, because they are doing the same thing, and at this rate we'll never have squash or pumpkins big enough to harvest before it freezes. I did this last year and it didn't damage the plants at all.
I know that one of the suggestions for people who grow giant vegetables is to prune all but one or two of the fruits on the vines.
