Babies and the Word "No" - Page 2

Our son was 18 months and we hadn't used the word with him. Just redirecting him when necessary. My husband's 24 yo sister came to stay with us and he learned "NO" and "MINE!" from her in less than 24 hours. I was mad enough to spit!

On the funny side, a good friend of mine's daughter calls her grandma "NoNo" rather than grandma because her grandma says "no no no no" everytime one of the kids does anything more than stand upright.

I avoid the word no unless Im putting it into context. For example when she runs in front of me to the street crossing I won't yell NO Ill say something like don't cross the street without holding my hand. That way when I do say no it stops her in her tracks because I reserve it for dangerous situations or times when I really want her to stop doing something. I don't think the work "no" is bad but I think its way overused and people don't explain what they are saying no about (I have a lot of acquaintances that they use no for everything and their kids are confused at times what they should or shouldn't be doing)
As for language understanding my 9 month old might not stop at No but she will come to me when I ask her to. She also understands it when I tell her to stop (I only use that when shes trying to climb onto/off of something that she might get hurt doing).
