Food passing too quickly? (and other problems)

I did a quick internet search, but didn't have much luck so I figured the next best place to ask would be here.

My daughter's been a bit sick over the last 4 or 5 days. She appears fine (if not horribly cranky), but she just cut 6 teeth (at once) and has had diarrhea. The diarrhea comes in small amounts (1-2 tbsp at a time) it varies between watery and yellow, to thicker and mucus-y (chunky pudding), and it seems to happen hourly.

I've put her back in disposables, so we're going through LOTS right now. A huge pain in the butt (literally!).

Today I noticed something strange. She had corn for lunch (among various other foods), and less than 3 hours later, it was in her diaper. She has not had corn in weeks, so I found this to be very strange. Can it really pass through that quickly??

I may make an appointment if it doesn't begin to firm up in the next few days, but for now I"m going to assume it's related to the teething. She doesn't appear to be sick in any other way (no fever, flu symptoms, etc), but she's very obviously not a happy baby.

She's also developed one HECK of a rash (more like a burn) from the acid in the stool, and constant wiping. I've managed to keep it under control using a combination of cream, air, and vaseline petroleum jelly, but if I don't stay on top of it it comes back quickly.

Has any of you gone through this before? She's 11 months old (today), if that helps.

ANY advice would be appreciated.

Corn can definitely pass that quickly, particularly with diarrhea.

We're just getting over a round of diarrhea here, fortunately nowhere near as bad as what you're going through. The only thing I can think of is maybe you could save a diaper or two and help air out her bottom from the rash a bit if you let her go naked in the yard for a while?

Thanks, SC. I'm glad to hear that can be normal. It's not even that the diarrhea is bad (it's not)... it's just never ending! She must have pooped 12 times today, maybe more. Tonight before bed, she pooped on average every 20 minutes, for about 3 hours. Small amounts.

Poor baby. I feel horrible for her, and I don't know what to do to help her.

I have been allowing her naps to be diaper free (and when she had the rash - the first night, she slept through the night diaper free as well - I think I got 3 hours of sleep that night because every time she moved, I woke up to make sure she was still on her mat). The jelly REALLY helps, and I just make sure that her diaper stays dry through the night.

So far, no diarrhea has happened while she sleeps. It's ALL during the day. Hopefully it stops sooner than later!

sgmom, I can't really offer any advice but I can offer my empathy. W/ T's deischezia he has leaky poopy bum all the time. And because he strains to go potty w/ no release we go through LOTS of diapers. We used up a box of 40 diapers in less than 24 hours last week! I feel for you and your DD. Good luck!

GOODNESS! That is a lot of diapers. I'm sorry your little one (and yourself) have to go through that!

My daughter's diarrhea hasn't gotten ANY better, but it has become much less frequent (thank Goodness for that!). And even better, her rash (nb. burn) is COMPLETELY gone.

Unfortunately though, we're back to full time diapers. Oh well... Maybe an EC break is required for now.

well, I do hope your DD is doing better by now. I've noticed w/ DS who gets a stomach bug at least once a year (he's almost 5) that it hits the little ones harder, and takes a lot longer to clear up. I think "loose stools" can go on for a week or even more after they aren't "sick" anymore, and there isn't a whole lot you can do about it, I think their systems are just still immature and take a while to get back to normal!

Thanks for the concern, emmaegbert.

She is doing MUCH better, thanks for asking. She stools are still mushy, but have firmed up considerably, and she's only going a couple times a day now (thank goodness!). It's good to know that they can continue for up to a week after the "bug" goes away, so the next time she gets sick I'll keep this in mind.

And a new box of diapers!! We went through an entire box (230 diapers) in under 2 weeks. And since we normally use cloth, that is a LOT of diapers for us.

I'm almost positive this was related to teething, but who knows. Maybe it was just a bug. *shrug*
