2 y/o stubbed toe on door- tetanus?

so today i opened a door to the store we were at an my dd put her foot forward as i opened the door, her toes went under the door and her big toe was stubbed pretty bad. it bled quite a bit and now seems to have sort of closed, the big toe nail has a horizontal line about 1/2 way down, like it was bent back at the time of injury. she is vax free. the toe looks a bit swollen and one side of it is getting red... i'm a bit worried about tetanus or other infection. since we were at the store, all i had on me was water in my water bottle and i used that to clean it until we got home, about 45 min. later. i then washed it with peroxide, thinking that getting some more oxygen to the area might be good. it appeared that her skin had mostly sealed back over the wound by then. any advice? she's been crying and whining off and on all day, but has also not had a nap. i'm not sure if this warrants a trip to the er...

If it were your toe, would you go to the ER?

Soak it in eucalyptus tea ... i had a similiar problem with my big toe and i soaked it several time a day for two days... if you buy the herbal tea.. the bags make good soaks and poultices.. i have always had incredible results using herbs. Soaking in a foot bath of sea salt is also good...

Stubbing a toe is always something that hurts... i could barely walk on mine.. but i would soak it before i ran to an MD.. they will try to push you into giving a vaccine or give you unnecessary antibiotics.. just keep an eye on it...

a vaccine would be usless at this point anyway. .. but they still need to make the sale... if you contract tetnus this way.. which is extremely rare... they would have to give the IG...the vax is pointless, unless your daughter is immunocompromised or has diabetes or circulatory issues.. i wouldn't be too worried about it

if it were my toe, no, i would not go to the er.

i stubbed my big toe as a kid more times than i can count. i can remember how bad that hurt too... i was also immunized for tetanus, and since dd is not, it's in the back of my mind to look for. i guess that i'm curious as to how long tetanus show up after an injury. i know what to look for, but not how long it takes to show up. then again, it may just be that i am a little paranoid since i don't know what kind of stuff was living on that door

i just gave her a bath and her toe soaked a while in the tub, and doesn't seem as swollen. it hurts her (obviously!), and i will do the sea salt soak and the eucalyptus poultices. i agree that herbs are stellar healers.

luckily dd's doc is a DO and not a vacc. proponent, so even if we did go to him, i'm not likely to even have the vax suggested. of course, the er would be another story...

tetanus usually occurs from deep puncture wounds that do not bleed.
the spores are found in animal feces and soil.
i can't remember the source, but on these boards, i read that there wre under 100 cases of tetanus in north america last year.
i would not be worried about tetanus

From this document: http://www.health.alberta.ca/documents/ND-Tetanus.pdf

Quote:
A total of 14 cases of clinical tetanus in IDUs, including one death, have been reported in England (11 cases), Scotland (two cases), and Wales (one case) between July 2003 and January 2004. The nine women and five men were between the ages of 20 and 53 years. Three were known to be unimmunized.
Quote:
Tetanus is rare in Canada. The number of cases reported annually ranged from one to seven (average five) from the years 1990 to 2000. The immunization status of most cases was unknown. Males over the age of 50 years accounted for the majority of reported cases
From 1995 to 2004 none of the reported Cases in Canada were in people under 30.

It's extremely rare especially in a child. Not something you get from stubbing your toe.
