First off, DS has a small mouth. This was one of the first things our ped said at the hospital. We were given a nipple shield to help his latch by day 4 which I wanted to wean from ASAP. By 3.5w we weaned completely and were happily BFing on the nipples. It hurt but I figured it was transitional pain that would get better. Two weeks later (5.5w) my nipples feel like shards of glass are being inserted when he first latches. It has gotten worse. I have to clench my teeth and count to 50 before it gets better.
have had our latch checked by experienced moms and an LC, who seemed to think he was latched properly. The only explanation I have been given is that he has a small mouth and doesn't get enough areola in.
Any advice to help the pain? I don't have any dryness/cracking/bleeding, just soreness and the glass feeling. Do you think it will get better with time?

I'm sorry you're still dealing with so much pain! There are a number of reasons for nipple pain beyond latch. Thrush and Reynaud's come to mind. Call your LLL Leader and she can help you sort things out!
