grabing himself while he pees

ds (9mo) has taken to grabing (and not gently either!) his parts pretty much as soon as we put him on the potty, and especially right as he's peeing, resulting in pee everywhere but in the potty. obviously, he's pretty interested in whats going on, but i'm not too keen on the mess. seems like no toy is interesting enough keep him distracted. he lets go of the toy and reaches down as soon as he starts peeing. holding his hands doesn't work either, as then he thinks its his cue to stand up, also resulting in pee everywhere *lol*. anyone have any other ideas on how to keep him distracted? or anyone btdt and can tell me it gets better. i know boys tend to be interested in their 'down there' for quite a while... oh yeah, and we don't do the classic hold, b/c he's pretty heavy, and i don't think he'd be comfortable enough to actually pee by now, as he's used to the potty.

i guess i should be happy he's not reaching for his bum, right?!

Is he nakey-bum the rest of the time (can he get his curiousity out before or after pee time)? Though it's likely the sensation of peeing that he's interested in, not his bits when they're not working.

A few things that I'm pulling from thin air, not experience:
-encouraging him to grab lower and not disrupt the flow (if he's going to grab, help him find a good way of still experiencing the touch but not causing chaos)
-putting a towel over top until the phase has passed?
-putting the potty in the bathtub? (i held DS in the traditional pose whenever there wasn't a potty around until he was close to 2- could you take him to a bush or to the bath tub and just hold him until he works this out of his system?)
-getting a potty with a hard-core pee guard that kind of blocks his access?

That's all I've got, good luck! And I'm certain after getting sprayed a few times he'll decide he's done soon enough!

Only if the pee's really smelly. Otherwise it's just like warm water and he might just giggle.

OMG!!! It is as if you are talking about MY ds2!!!

REally, the same here! Also 9 mo!!

I try toys too, but he really likes his penis while peeing...

and pee ervyerwhere!! :-)

Yep, same here, no ideas yet. HE is naked bum a couple of hours, he is also in a sort of potty pause, due to teething, .....

thanks for the ideas! no, he's not nakey bum often, so that might make a difference, not sure.. and no, he doesn't seem to mind the pee in the least. i don't think it even phases him.

moonchild, well, at least we're not alone, it always helps to know that!!

You're also describing my son. He only stopped grabbing himself while he peed after he got himself in the face a few times (he was about 12 mo at that time). (Looking straight down while holding penis staight up.) I had a really hard time not laughing - mostly b/c I was usually the recipient. Now he plays until just before he has to go, then he just stares. Occasional spray accidents now but pretty rare. I guess its pretty facinating to him matching up the sensation to the visual of a stream of liquid coming out of your own body. (Something us girls might never really understand, unless we are contortionists.)

Good luck.
