eating placenta after birth - is this TF?

my midwives have suggested that i eat my placenta as a way to prevent post natal depression (i've been quite depressed during my pregnancy and i'm prone to depression and anxiety). i really don't think i could do it though as i'm so squeamish and can only just about eat liver! they've also found someone who can put it into a capsule so i could take it without tasting it. but i was wondering if eating placenta is a TF thing to do and whether there is any truth as to whether it might help prevent PND. i'm also going to post on the pnd forum aswell but thought i'd ask here re. the TF things. anyone know?

I feel it is TF - it is a form of organ meat. Capsule form is great. You could also take a piece and mix it up in a smoothie. Many claim they cannot taste the placenta in a smoothie, but I would not know personally as I have not tried one of those.

I am planning to consume mine, but in dehydrated/capsule form. I believe I had mild PPD after my son's birth 4 1/2 years ago, and I've had problems for the last two years, since getting really sick and discovering my gluten intolerance. I just don't have the stores most women do... anything that stresses my system seems to send me into a tailspin these days.

I'm hoping to hire someone from this organization, but there's no one in my city. http://placentabenefits.info/index.asp

I know it's very traditional for animals of all types to consume their placentas. I'll bet humans in various cultures have done so, as well. Maybe it's on an as-needed basis? It's definitely needed in my case!

thanks for your replies and the links. i'll have a read of them asap. i think i'm going to get the encapsulation done and i'm also thinking of getting it made into a homoepathic remedy as that was suggested as a good thing to do to.

One of the mw's attending my dds birth encapsulated our placenta for me.

She had also checked with me before the birth because it was her preferred procedure if there was significant bleeding pp to take part of the placenta from my side and make a smoothie with it-she said I wouldn't be able to taste it.

This wasn't necessary, but I did take the capsules for 2w pp. And despite what some people told me, there wasn't any detectable smell or taste to the capsules.

I'm also hanging on to them as the mw said that they can be kept for the baby and given to them later on during stressful times or times of transition (first day of school, etc.).
