I need to talk to the Christian mamas that cover...

I was watching a tv show online and one of the characters (Muslim) was covered...Something about it hit home for me. It's not the first time and I'm not sure why I feel the way I do about it. I have no problems with tank tops (especially living in Texas) but dress fairly modest by my own choice. So, I wanted you guys to weigh in...

What denomination are you? Why do you cover your head/hair? All the time or just semi? Do you dress covered as well?

A million questions...I'd really appreciate your input.

I am Orthodox, and women in my church normally cover their heads in church and during prayer services. By contrast, the men are required to uncover their heads in church. It is not a decency issue but a way of showing reverence.
I am not sure if you would say I "dress covered" but we are supposed to dress modestly according to local standards, men as well as women.

Not Christian, but a tip: go to the "Cover-ed Girls" thread in Spirituality and ask your question. You'll get a more targeted audience and probably more answers.

I was kind of shy to just bust in on their conversation...

I'm part of a Lutheran church- not the bigest one in the US, but an older, very conservative one. In some of our churches all the women cover and in some none cover.

We are non-denom.

I cover because of 1 Corinthians 11 (good starting point, anyway--Biblical example and the Early Church example give me good reason to believe it was not just a cultural mandate, but for all times)

Around my family I'm not so careful, but I always cover before we go out, and keep the covering on until after nightime prayers. I dress modestly as well. Though I remember vividly some of the ladies in my parents Mennonite church who had no problem combining slacks with their little "coffee filter" coverins.

I cover but not with a hat or a piece of cloth. I am covered by my uncut hair.

1 Cor 11 says that a woman should be covered and a man uncovered, but that a womans hair is given to her as a covering.

If the hair is cut, then it is the same as being uncovered.

I'm LDS and I cover. I try to do it all the time but there has been a time or two that for whatever reason I ran out of the house without one. (I keep meaning to have a generic black or white one in the truck for such occasions). Most of the time my covering is a bandanna folded into a triangle tied around my head with my bangs out. Depending on how I'm feeling, sometimes I will cover more - I have some traditional-type coverings like bonnets or caps like you might see mennonite women wearing, and I also have scarves that I can do a full wrap with (similar to what Muslim women wear).

I dress semi-covered I guess. Being LDS I can't wear tank tops or low cut shirts anyway, as they would show my garments. I don't wear pants (I am looking for some long tunic tops or even dresses that might be too short for me to wear normally to wear over some jeans, but I haven't found any yet) and while I'm excited that it's getting colder so 3/4 length sleeves like I prefer will be more appropriate, I have issues with heat and so wouldn't imagine wearing anything like that in the summer. I suffer through in my tshirts.

This is one belief about how these verses should be interpreted. I like this article that talks about the other side (that we are to cover our heads with something, the hair is not what he is talking about).
