Book Recommendations

My DD is 9 months and we're expecting a baby boy in January. So I KNOW this is advanced planning, but that's how I like things!

I'm getting to the stage with my daughter where I'm not sure what to do about certain behaviours- or I see other people's kids doing x, y, z, and think, "what would I do in that situation" and I haven't the foggiest idea.

So for her, I'm looking for some sort of positive parenting book that makes me feel like I have a path to keep to (at least to some degree!). I know it's impossible to recommend a book based on her personality, since it's still changing a lot, but even something really general would be good.

For my son- I'm terrified of having a boy. My husband had serious parent issues growing, and as a result has no real understanding of how to parent - let alone what to do with a boy specifically. He's just waiting for me to tell him what to do. He does have very firmly established ideas of gender rolls (girls play with dolls, boys play with trucks) and that really bothers me so I'd like to find something that can deal with that.

My sister and I grew up fabulously. My parents seemed to do the same parenting techniques with my two brothers and... well.... there have been some really horrible trouble spots. Their lives seem to be getting better, but they're both in their twenties now.

I don't know what happened there- or if it would have happened regardless of their parenting technique- but I am SO SCARED of repeating the same mistakes. I have no idea what to do. I can easily identify with my daughter and know what worked for my sister and I, but for my son... no idea. I'm sure boys heads work much differently, but I'm baffled and my husband is too.

So any books on parenting BOYS specifically would be good as well!

(I have seen book recommendation lists around here somewhere... but the list was long and I got bogged down. I'm sorry for posting what i'm sure has already been posted a million times!)

There are lots of good books but I think one that works well for boys is Playful Parenting by Lawrence Cohen. There is a list at the top of this forum but ones I have read and liked are Kids ARe Worth It by Barbara Coloroso, Easy to Love, Difficult to Discipline by Becky Bailey, Raising Our Children, raising Ourselves By Naomi Aldort. I think the best thing to remember is that so many discipline issues are phases and will pass eventually, especially the toddler/preschooler ones
