8.5 Month Old Suddenly a Tummy Sleeper - Questions

My DD always has slept on her back or her side... I kind of started the whole side thing around 4 months when I realized it made transfers to the family bed or crib easier. She was a late roller - not really proficient until around 7 months. In the last week she has started flipping to her tummy and sleeping that way.

Any reason for me to worry about her sleeping this way? Okay when bed sharing? Does it seem strange to start sleeping this way now?

My gut feeling is there is nothing to worry about, but just thought I would check in. I do remember reading once that a lot of SIDS deaths were attributed to babies who normally slept on their back being put to sleep on their tummies at daycare... I guess that has been nagging at me.

Go with your gut. It's not a problem.

Although a SIDS diagnosis can technically be given under one year, and I've heard of the odd suspected case over a year, the majority of SIDS cases are between 2 and 4 months. Your DD is way out of the high risk period. Not to mention, SIDS is more common in boys than girls.

Most people will tell you not to worry once baby can roll into tummy sleeping position on their own.

Mine did the same thing when she started rolling over. It was a little weird to get used to in the beginning but my gut felt ok about it, especially because we cosleep. Now, she likes burying her head under a blanket or pillow so just sleeping on her tummy feels a lot safer than it used to ;0)
