Swine Flu non-vaxers: what precautions/what will you do this flu season

The whole swine flu issue and vaccination has me thinking. I am not totally opposed to vaccinations, that being said a new vaccine that is essentially not tested throughtly just really dosent seem right to me.

Im am very particular during flu season but Im thinking Im going to have to step it up a bit. Here are some of the things we do and what I might have to do if it truly becomes epidemic around my parts.

1. we wash hands all the time. We do use hand sanitizer if we are out in public often. Followed by vigourous hand washing when we get home.

2. taht being said I normally limit the kids unnecessay outings during the height of it. I do not take my kids out sick even if its a cold, especially DS since he goes to various therapists/specialists and that would be exposing other SN childrens to what he has. I wished others would do the same.

3. DH immediately takes a bath upon coming home. He is also a hand washing fool so I dont have to preach to him about that He also has no shame to voice his opionion about people coming to work sick.

4.I have come to terms that I may have "bunker down home" if necessary if it really hits like they are projecting. I have begun stocking up on some essentials to limit my outings as well

Now that being said im not panicing but realizing that if it does become bad I dont want to have to be out there if I dont absolutely have to. Waht are some other things you guys are thinking about doing?

Not watching the news will be my first line of defense.

But seriously...I can't say I will do anything special for H1N1. We already wash hands all the time, and eat healthily. In general, I'm just not all that worried.

That made me laugh... We will be doing what we always do which is wash hands and eat healthy as well... We might avoid an outing if we ever felt the need to.

Last winter was our first illness- free one so I will be attempting to repeat that. Basically good whole foods and vitamins. I had DD on a liquid multi, liquid omega-3, liquid cal/mag/ vit D and chewable probiotics. She was in Day Care and outside constantly and only got one day of pukieness in mid dec. Other than that, from Sept till June she was healthy.

The previous winter she was on nebulizer treatments up to 4x a day due to reactive airway issues and constantly battling ear infections.

The only additional precaution I'm taking is keeping DD home on the day they give out the vaccine in school.

Ditto with my DS!

And I'll be trying to get him to eat better he is really picky. But that isn't a new thing.

Our precaution was catching it in June.

Okay, that wasn't intentional. It will likely be effective, however.

We'll eat well, wash hands, and use a cart cover at the supermarket (no wipes/sanitizer). I'll make sure we're all taking vitamin D.

Same for us, lots of hand washing, using our 'coughing cup" (inside elbow) for sneezing/coughing, getting lots of fresh air, plenty of rest & eating healthy (lots of soups & citrus fruits).

I will probably also add Phytolacca Decandra to the list, it's a homeopathic immunity builder.

I sort of buy the theory that low vitamin D hampers our immune system and promotes seasonal flu when many people quit getting fresh air, but that didn't stop the virus from sweeping through Mexico in April when it was very sunny.

I will still push the family to be outside in the sunshine , avoid antibiotics, take probiotics this fall.

I don't believe that it will be bad as the media portrays, but if it did get that bad, I would be really vigilant about no dairy and even more reduced sugar in our diets, too, as a healthy immune system is the best defense.

DD starts Kindgeraten on Monday, so I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little bit "worried" about the funk she might bring home... But that's really only because I am expecting a baby in the next week or two and the thought of a sick infant always makes me sad. Of course, I'll have breastfeeding as my first line of defense.

But really, my DD is super healthy and as long as we continue with eating well, taking our vitamin D and C supplements, probiotics, and handwashing... we should be fine.

Oh, and when I take my newborn out in public, I'll wear him in a sling covered up so no one can cough on him or touch him!

I'm not planning on doing anything different. My kids and I have rockin' immune systems, and I think that's because we aren't all nutty about these sorts of things. We cover our mouths when we cough, because it's rude not too, but we don't wash our hands overly much (just after potty and before eating) and I don't plan on changing that at all.
