Urine Burn?

Hi! My husband has been out of town all week, so DS has been with sitters in the evening while I go to work for 4 hours. One was DH's sister, who has no kids. The other is our friend, whose youngest is 10. so needless to say, not the most familiar with diapering. Well, both days he was with them, neither changed his diaper the entire time! : He was sopping! Usually, with me if it gets too bad, he'll just pull it off, but he was having so much fun playing he didn't.

A couple of times in the last day or two he was grabbing his crotch through his diaper saying "Penis hurt!" and whimpering a little. At first I thought it was just from havingn to pee (we're having the potty training battle right now). But after looking at it this afternoon, it looks like he has a big raw red spot on the end of his foreskin, about the size of a dime. I gently pulled it back a little to make sure it was the skin, and nothing inside, and it appears to be external only, on one side of the tip near the opening.

Could this be a urine burn from being in a peepee diaper for too long? If so, how do I best treat it? If not, what else could it be? The spot is not oozing or anything. It's just 'angry' looking.

Sounds like ammonia burn from the pee, it breaks down into ammonia after a while. I used cloth diapers with my DS and we had ammonia problems from detergent build up with them and he ended up with what looked like raw spots but were blisters that popped. We switched to disposables for naps and night for a few days and gave him lots of air time and it healed up pretty quick. I didn't use any ointments or anything. I did use Zinc cream at first but it didn't seem to help.

Well, he's pretty naked most of the time at home anyway, and I figured that was probably best. I just stripped all these diapers not 2 mos ago due to DH's poor detergent choice. So, I don't think it has anything to do with that. Most of our diapers are tiny tush one size pockets, so they wick pretty well, but on these two occaissions he happened to be in a fitted w/ cover, so it probably exacerbated the situation.

Honestly, how could they not just change him!? grr...

the spot doesn't look really raw, just sort of like a sunburn...

My son's blister was really raw and ended up sticking to the fleece cloth and everytime I changed him the scab would peel off that's why we switched to disposables for a few days. We were using Pockets too. Sounds like your DS just got the start of the blisters from them not changing him. He should be just fine.

You might also want to try a few baking soda baths.

If it's hurting him to urinate, try the cup trick. Have him pee into a cup, or bowl, or sink full of water with his penis submerged. It should dilute it and help the burning.

Since it's basically diaper rash, you can treat it with the same ointment you use on his butt. We used Burt's Bees, but whatever works for him is fine.

Be glad he's not circumcised, b/c it this kind of irritation that causes meatal stenosis in circumcised boys.
