Favorite carrier to wear on your back?

I have a Mei Tai and a Peanut Shell sling (brand new, never used - bought it to wear when the baby is a newborn and we're out and about), but H and I are going to be doing a TON of gardening next year and I want to be able to wear something while I'm doing that with the baby on my back.

I've read about Ergo's, heard rave reviews from another mama about hers, but they seem a bit pricey. Are they worth the money? Any place that you can recommend where I could find a used one? Could I use the Mei Tai in place of an Ergo? The Mei Tai is practically brand news as I bought at right before DS turned 1 and he got too heavy to carry too quickly, so it was used for 3 months tops.

You could use the MT for back carries. That is what I use and what many people use.

Mei Tai

I have a homemade Mei Tai. It works well for back carries. I'd try that first, and if it doesn't work for you for some reason, the ergo and the beco butterfly are both very easy to use.

The beco is even more expensive than the ergo, but because of the way it fits it's probably the easiest carrier to get a baby on your back by yourself. I got my beco for $70. but feel that it would have been worth the $140 they usually sell for.

If you have a mei tai already, just use that. Then ask your friend to borrow her ergo to see if you like it before dropping the cash on one.

MTs are good for back carries but we also loved our ergo. Now I use a Beco, which is similar to an Ergo, and there are a couple of other similar carriers out there including the Patapum. If yu can try one out before you buy that would be nice, and you can usually find carriers second hand for a better price.

We loved our Mei Tai for back carries, and I have an Onbuhimo now.

The mei tai should work fine I have an Ergo and love it, definitely worth the money, and it's easier and more comfortable than a mai tai (IMO) but if you already have a MT you should definitely try it first.

I'll sound like an echo, but really the mei tai should work great for a back carrier. And what's nice is that you'll be able to do a high back carry, so your little one can peak over you shoulder as you work in the garden.

You can get a used carrier on the forums at The Baby Wearer. That would be a great place to look if you decide you want another carrier.
