need a little guidance....for CDing a newborn-infant

hello there:

so i just inherited a bunch of newborn & infant diaper covers-maybe like 10 and there are some more on the way (courtesy of my awesome sister-in-law) and I just wanted to know which kind of dipes would work best with a newborn. I didn't start CDing with DS#1 until he was about 6-8 months and I used pockets and loved them. And I know newborns go through dipes like crazy. I'm leaning toward prefolds, they just seem easier to me, but I'm just curious as to what have other mamas used & loved in terms of cloth.

(I've been doing lots of research and now my brain feels scrambled....ah the joys of pregnancy!)

TIA!

this time around, we've mostly been using prefolds and i've been really happy with them. simple, no fuss, no leaks. the only other dipe i've really liked at this stage is my thirsties fab fitted. keeps all the poop in very nicely. i also have a small snappiable fitted i made that like really well.

i've tried some different pockets/aio, but i can't seem to get a good enough fit and we've tended to get leaks with them more often than not.

my ds was 7lb 3 oz at birth and now at 2.5 wks, he's around 9lb 5oz. The nb pf's are just starting to get a bit small in the width, we'll probably use them another week or so. And we often use a doubler since he pees a lot (often i use bamboo wipes i have. they work nicely). just getting ready to prep some infant pf's today so they are ready when we are!

btw, i found many of our diapers & covers a bit too big when we were dealing with the cord stump, it was hard to keep the dipes below it. for the thristies fitteds, i found i could fold the front down (outwards) and then use a snappi to close it! just in case that might help someone else!

good luck with your prep and diaper hunt and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

My favorite fitteds for newborns were Swaddlebees (the newborn size organic with a cord snap-down). I've also used Kissaluvs 0s, and they worked well, but are definitely bigger than the Swaddlebees. They also have a snap-down.

There are some great WAHMs who make itty bitty newborn dipes, too! FLAM is one brand I have heard raves about over the years.

I liked the kiss-a-luvs and Mother-ease sandy's xs for my newborn. She was 6 14, so they've lasted quite awhile. The Kiss-a-luvs are a bit smaller but the Sandy's are more absorbant, so I liked them better at night after the first couple weeks.

I'm in the same situation. Didn't start CDing dd until 9mths so have NO clue with how to cd a newborn. I LOVED my pockets for her. Do pockets really not work with bf poo? Even the tiny newborn sizes? I HATED HATED HATED disposables the first 6 months because of all the blowouts. I WISH I had considered cloth earlier. So now that we are preggers with #2, cloth is a no brainer.

cost for me plays a big role in the begining even tiny newborns will grow fast and tiny newborn diapers will be outgrown overall very quickly. A full stash of special newborn sized pockets for example will run around $400 dollars on average and the baby may outgrow then in like a month (though resale could be great) As far as containment nothing to me worked better on a exclusivly BF baby with newborn explosive poo than eaither a well snappied prefold or a good fitted and cover combo. AIOs honestly just didn't hold a candle to a good diaper cover combo in the early stage (we started activitly CD around 2 months) My first successful CD combo were snugglebottom velcro fitted diapers very affordable at around $25/per6 and bummi wraps. I didn't discover prefolds till almost 6 months.

I used a combination of Thirstie's fab fitteds and preemie prefolds. Some people swear you can use infant prefolds from birth but even my 8 lb 3 oz baby needed the preemie size. I like Bummis covers, especially Bummis Super Brites.
