I knew I'd just be disappointed...

I work for a hospital in the hospice program. They just spent millions on this Women and children's wing. The lactation center is NEVER open, no number on the door to call-- I have gone by 3 x's in the last month. Today I go by hoping to get support and a new part for my pump. Ha! I ask about supply ( I pump 12oz a day) baby is 6 mo and gaining, meeting milestones etc. Still I get a little weird about supply-- I wish I had more. I tell her I am taking Fenugreek- LC said that it can cause problems with insulin for baby and mom so I should stop taking it. She looked askance when I said I was not supplementing or taking REglan (sp?) and did not plan on adding rice cereal. She said that the baby would not get enough iron and I needed to talk to my pediatrician. ARGH!!! Sometimes I don't want to talk to anyone about bFing beyond infancy. LC's are just like therapists I guess, good ones and bad ones. and they did not have a part for the pump. GRRRR

That's frustrating. Too bad they couldn't have thrown a little more money into the lactation center .

You are correct in saying that LCs are like any other doc--there are good ones and bad ones. Many haven't even breastfed themselves, so anything beyond the beginning problems are beyond them. I'm sorry that wasn't a better experience for you.

Start a petition to get an IBCLC (or 12) on staff. It is beyond irresponsible for a major hospital to not have fully qualified people running the lactation department.

Having an LC being the only one available for a lactation department is like having an LPN be the only one available to set a broken leg. Sure, they've had a few training courses and can probably do in a pinch, but there's just too much risk of them missing something important or not doing things quite right.
