#57 - The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchan

This novel begins in 1915 in Niagara Falls, Ontario when the protagonist, Bess Heath, is finishing her junior year at a Catholic boarding school. Her father is fired from the local hydroelectric plant and turns to the bottle, while her once-vivacious older sister takes to her bed and begins wasting away, her fiance having broken up with her. Beth meets a young local riverman, Tom, and their lives become entwined.

Although I felt the author's writing style could use more polish, especially her dialogue (which was kind of awkward and also didn't suit the period), I really enjoyed this novel. It was an absorbing read, and I loved learning so much about the history of Niagara Falls, an area I've always found interesting. The ending was a bit of a shocker, though!

DH and I are going to Niagara Falls next week for our 10th anniversary trip -- might be a good book for the plane~

Absolutely! It's very readable, and really gives you a fresh perspective on the area. It would be a terrific read for before or during a trip.

It would be very interesting to compare Niagara Falls then and now.

It's funny how the detective agency series is about the one book we don't agree on . . . (though the last couple I didn't like much).
I know -- I wonder what it is. Sometime we'll have to sit down over smoothies and hash it out. Baking Cakes was okay for me, definitely not raving over it.

I've got this one out from the library to read. I'll probably start it soon.
