Most children who are inspired by the joy of books and stories will learn to read eventually. Motivating them to read...that's hugely important!
It doesn't make any sense that the powers that be are concerned with the mechanics of reading and not the wonder of it. I know that with my children, they learned the rules of phonics and could read, it wasn't until they wanted to read that their skill really solidified. Reading Rainbow made kids want to read. First you have to want to do something, then you can enjoy doing it. It's so sad.
I loved Reading Rainbow. Loved it, loved it, loved it. I was and am such a book lover. I felt so at home with the show. I wish there were more shows like RR on TV these days.

Well, apparently a new company or two took it over a few years ago and LeVar Burton has had philosophical differences with said company about the show. So part of it is he decided to leave, and of course the show can't exist without him.
