Quick Help Please- Allergic Reaction

My 17 month old was eating a carrot and I realized she has broken out in a rash. I am slightly allergic to carrots so I am pretty sure that is what caused it. I didn't develop my carrot allergy[among other things] till my teen years so I thought it was environmental factors that caused it and didn't think it would bother her.

I do not have any childrens benadryl, I have capsules of 25mg dye free benadryl. I looked up the dosage online for children and for her weight[25ish pounds] it was close to 10mg.

According to this...
http://www.texaschildrens.org/Parent...y.aspx?aid=918

So I could I just take half of the liquid in the capsule and give it to her? I am worried if she has my allergy her throat will swell up, it is okay right now.
My car actually broke a few days ago, so I can't go get some.

Thank you.

I would not give her the adult benadryl

I would watch her behavior and see if she becomes irritable, starts vomiting and develops a runny nose. At that point I'd call your doctor and ask their advice. I've never heard of an anaphylactic reaction to carrots but who knows...

When you do get your car fixed-keep liquid benadryl in the house.

My throat swells up slightly from carrots and gets itchy. I have that problem with most fruit and nuts, it sucks.

Thank you for the advice though, I guess I just wasn't sure if they were the same thing.

Do you have a pediatrician who has an on-call physician to call and ask? Or a nurse's line?

I'd definitely watch the rash and see if she develops any other symptoms. And of course, not feed her any more carrots (or celery, which is the same food family).

ugh. Just some empathy here from someone with the very same allergies. Though I also developed them in my teens, I have been concerned that each of my children would have my food allergies. Thus far, my 9 year old and 5 year old do not...and my 4 month old only nurses! I am sorry you experienced an allergy in your little one--I hope she's feeling better already!

I really hesitate to offer dosing recommendations over the internet. Can you call a doctor's office and get an ok (or not) on that?

I know you just saw a rash and benadryl (kids) is the right choice for that of course. It sounds like a typical allergic reaction and not something more.

However, since you have an anaphylactic allergy with throat swelling do you have an epi pen?
