There are books out there that are completely non threatening. I used to think that I'd never let my child read stories where scary, really mean, terrible things happen but then I realized that some of those questionable stories may teach something deeper.
As my child gets older, he can handle more situations in books. I definitely read books to myself first so that I can decide whether my son is at the appropriate age for the content.
