How long is a Moby/strechy wrap good for?

I was just wondering how long do you think a Moby or other strechy-style wrap is good for? I know they rock for newborns but my Babe is two-months now (almost 12 pounds) and I would love to be able to wear a wrap and just pop her in and out, but I wonder if she is already getting too big to make it worth it. Right now I wrap her in crinkle cotton and am working on a woven for when she is older. I would either just get some cotton jersey to make my own, or try to find a moby used somewhere...

Thanks!

I used my Moby for a back wrap cross carry with my 25 lb 8-month-old. It's lent out to a mom with a newborn now, but I'll probably use it again when it gets cool this fall - he's now 27 lbs and 10 months. I do prefer the mei tai just because it's quicker than wrapping and less extra fabric, but the Moby will certainly still be useful as a back-up. I haven't tried it on the front since he was about 4 months.

a woven is a much better bet, IMO. i didn't like stretchy wraps past the first couple of months. and even then, honestly, i prefer a woven if i'm going to wrap. you can pop baby in and out of a woven wrap too if you tie it right, and they are a lot more supportive. you can probably find a cheaper woven like an ellaroo or a medley for less than $45ppd on TBW. i've sold both recently for like $35ppd and those prices aren't uncommon. if you really want a stretchy, get a wrapsody stretch - much less stretchy than any other on the market, making it a better bet for bigger/heavier babies.

at that age i start using MT's a lot more, too. you can froggy their legs in until they're able to be legs out, and a sturdy one with a larger body should take you into toddlerhood.

re: the pp using the stretchy for a back carry.... moby does advertise this, but most babywearing vendors and babywearing group leaders/teachers don't advocate using it in that way.

I'm still using mine with my 6 month old (on the front, face in and face out), but finding it getting a bit saggy, so I think I'm near the end of it. He weighs 17lbs or so?

Technically, it's supposed to be up to 35 lbs, but most wrappers switch to woven wrap or other carrier at about 18-20lbs. Honestly, if my little one was 12 lbs, I'd save up for a woven wrap instead of a stretchy wrap at that point.

DD is 2.5 and 28lbs. I can still use my Bali Baby Stretch with her -- it's less stretchy than a Moby. However I don't really use it much anymore. Wearing her is now usually just 'quickies' and the ring sling is more convenient, or the mei tai for a back carry.

We used the Moby a LOT during her first few months and loved it. That's before I had the BBB. It did become too stretchy and saggy after a few months old. I've sold the Moby and if I have another babe, I'll just use the BBB from the beginning when I want the comfort of the stretchy. I also have a shorty and a mid-size woven wrap, not long enough for the full-on cross carries.

A friend of mine still uses her Moby with her almost 2 year old! I stopped using mine when my DD was about 4 months and about 18 lbs, but only because I found it quicker and more convenient to use a SSC.

You should definitely check out The Baby Wearer though. You can buy used ones off the forum. Then maybe you can get a few carriers! :
